Buying Diamonds online -- need some sites
« on: March 18, 2014, 08:01:42 AM »
My bro is celebrating his 10 year anni with his wife and wants to buy her some diamond stud earrings and asked me if I knew any good sites online.  I checked a few like bluenile, ritani etc... and they are priced exactly the same to the last cent.  It seems like one major player with many sites.  Like the anabolihalo of the diamond world.

For those getbiggers that don't fly in diamond brokers to their mansions, do you know of any legit sites that are decently priced?

I would advise against spending thousands of dollars to aquire a tiny shiny rock devoid of any function, especially online

Don't buy online, visit a real retailer and look at them. Impurities aren't as easy to detect with a low pixel picture.

But if you live in Hickville/Redneckville then buying online might be the only option.

Actually, buying online is a pretty sophisticated thing to do for a larger stone. When u buy a stone of at least $10K or up, you're really buying the GIA certificate and I can guarantee u that a reputable online site will sell u a stone w/ a legit GIA certificate for half of what a store like Tiffany's will sell it to u for. Costco will come closer in price but an online retailer like Blue Nile will still beat their price by a decent margin.

Diamond earrings are a different story though. Unless u have serious cash, buying 2 big quality stones is usually cost prohibitive. Instead, you're probably better off getting lesser quality stones that are bigger. It's best to go to a retail store and check them out so the woman is okay w/ the size. U may pay a lot for 2 high quality stones but they may be tiny and she may prefer more "bling" rather than high quality.

Agreed, though mr Diablo didn't specify his price range. But you are correct.

Blue Nile seems to set the standard.  Every other site seems to mimick the Blue Nile site.  His range is about $5K.  He wants to get her some nice diamond earrings but not flashy negro athlete style.

Diamonds aren't even stones. They are a complex lattice of carbon molecules.

I was using the term in the slang sense, I appreciate the physics lesson though.

Ill go ahead and file "complex lattice of carbon molecules" in the "shit I don't need to know" folder in-between calculus and proper nutrition timing.

I'm in total agreement with you funk51!

I too would steer clear of buying diamonds online.
You can't examine them yourself or view them under a loop to check for impurities or colour

I say stock up on the gold bullion instead.

He can say "I Love You" in soooo many different ways.

He can give her one or a few of these every week  :D

If she has her heart set on diamond earrings, he should go into a store in person to get them.

and he should present them with one, or a few of these Thanking her for marrying him.  :)

...and don't forget her birthday if it's coming up

The rule for a jewelry purchase is:

Don’t buy jewelry as an “investment.”  The markup for jewelry over the raw material cost is very large.  You buy a piece because you find it attractive and you like it.

Sometimes a special interest piece like the original Bulova Accutron with the tuning fork movement will appreciate over the original purchase price.  If that happens, “aren’t you lucky!”  That won’t happen often.
