A FEMALE teacher has told of her regret at “10 days of madness” during which she become “infatuated” with a student and slept in his bed.
Bernadette Smith, a married 35-year-old, spent a night in bed with 16-year-old Gary Ralston, wearing only her jeans and a bra.
“I was thinking I was quite lucky. A lot of the boys fancied her,” Gary told The Daily Mail.
“I couldn’t believe she was with me. It was the last thing I expected. She said she thought she was going crazy but couldn’t help the way she was feeling.”
Ms Smith did not have sex with Gary, but the two kissed on a number of occasions.
But Ms Smith, who was experiencing marital problems at the time of the relationship, said she now realised it had been a mistake.
“The police asked me if I loved Gary. I said I did. But I realise now I didn’t. Looking back, it is hard to explain how I felt at the time,” she said.
“I didn’t fancy Gary but I was so consumed by wanting to make sure he was OK that even when I was sitting in a cell at the police station, all I could think about was him.”
She described the relationship as “10 days of madness” and said it happened while she was dealing with the news that her husband had an affair and a child with another woman.
The couple have since separated and Ms Smith, who worked as a history and English teacher at Bannockburn High in Scotland, has been suspended from teaching.
She will also be listed on the sex offenders’ register for two years.
She told The Mirror that she had tried to be a positive influence on her student and had been trying to help him.
“The very thing I was trying to protect him from, I ended up doing to him myself,” Ms Smith said. “Because although he’ll be full of bravado, this will have had a rotten effect on him and I am sorry for that. Truly sorry.”
