Barefoot running
« on: April 02, 2014, 02:07:54 PM »
I concider to start barefoot running 3 times/week around 30min-1houer after my weighttraining! Just to build calf! Been cycling 2 years now 3-5 times/week and I think my calf has become better!

Everytime I see a runner I always think! He got better calf than 90% of gym people!

Barefoot running can have some benefits, but most people shock their bodies. You need to start walking barefoot before running barefoot. The reason why barefoot running got popular is because it strengthens tiny muscles that are otherwise stabilized in running shoes.

If you're over 200 pounds, I wouldn't do it...Foot injuries are almost as bad as back injuries...

Calves are the one muscle group that I rarely ever train directly.  I stretch them out prior to a cycling trip, but rarely train them directly.  I've been cycling for for decades now, and calf muscles are something that I just always remember having.   Just genetics.   Not sure running will do anything for you if your not blessed with lots of calf muscle cells.

Distance running will do nothing for your calves. It'll build up your quads, if anything.

Sprint work will give you more all over muscle

Yeah you should weigh as little as you can to minimize the punishment on your joints.

Hell, if you weigh more than 170 I wouldn't recommend distance running

I agree, get familiar with walking barefoot first. It's great for balance. And you could develop your toes to pick up small stuff from the floor.  :)

Watch the floor you're walking on and choose a barefoot shoe according to it, if you happen to walk on barefoot shoes. Some shoes have a thicker sole. Pavement, asphalt and cobble stones are not so nice to walk barefoot on, running is worse. And gravel... well, that just hell in most barefoot shoes. But grass, sand, mud, pine needles and so on are nice with barefoot shoes.

Note: if you walk through a meadow with sheep, and you wear five finger shoes: watch were you place your feet! The feeling of luke warm sheep poo squishing between your toes is anything but pleasant...

Sounds like the type of new-age stuff an Angelino would do. Make sure to stop at Richard Simmons for a foot massage. Full circle.

Running in general is great for orthopedic surgeons, barefoot running by itself isn't the problem. The idiots getting a running start going barefoot (I've seen them jump into barefoot running 15 k first attempt) are almost certain to injure themselves. No different from idiots jumping on 4g of gear right away. The activity itself isn't the problem, it's the fact that they are idiots.

And yes, I have run barefoot (Vibrams). It's great. No knee pain, no ankle pain, no shin splints that I was always getting. You know why? Because I wasn't an idiot and, like anal with a virgin, I eased into it. Start walking a few miles in them every day. Then increase mileage. Then, a few months later, when your lower leg and foot musculature have caught upto a completely different gait, start running.

The whole point is a much softer heel strike. If you are only used to extremely cushioned shoes, then switching cold turkey will ruin your joints. Get used to walking on your forefoot, and all the pain will be gone. Hell, I can run on my forefoot (and only my forefoot, heels never touching the ground) for about eight minutes. In my teens I couldn't do a 100 yard dash without dropping back on my heels.

So yes, barefoot running is great. Unless you're an idiot, in which case it will fuck you up.
