Just stop now. As lame as it is to go through the effort to find a log to use as a kickstand, it's even lamer that you would think a mountain bike is supposed to have one.

As my brother is a high level mountain bike competitor, you are quite correct. Traditional, those actually used as MTB, don't have kick stands. But there are some that just buy a MTB because they think it's cool (never actually going into the mountains) and use it as touring bikes and will have one installed after market.

Needless to say, this is heavily frowned upon by the purist and shows that the rider is just a poseur.

Beef, hardcore badass fella that he is, no way is going to install no goddamn kick stand on his MTB.

Most medium level/high end mtn bikes don't have provisions for mounting a kickstand.

Exactly. Most.

But it's a moot point. MTB were not designed for a kick stand for good reason.

Cost versus even ounces are disproportional. To pay a fortune for a lightweight MTB then include a kick stand doesn't make sense. Also, there is simply no need for it. In the mountains it's not as easy finding level and stable ground to even use it. People just lean on something or drop it on the ground. No big deal it's not concrete.

But as MTBing has gotten more popular you have the foo-foo crowd come in. No big deal. To each his own. Just like some would like an automatic transmission on a Shelby Mustang which is being offered in the 2016 version.
