This might pit old school versus new school but am really interested in who you guys consider among the best ever in the sport.  So many great fighters but to pick the top five - am really curious if there is some consensus as to who was best ever

OK here we go.........again

in no order: Marco Ruas, Rickson Gracie, Randy Couture, Ken Shamrock, Igor Vovchanchyn

This is in respect to the fighters when they were in their Primes - at their absolute best. Igor and Ken have gone into freefall as they have gotten older but 10 years ago these were the best around and would have held their own today. Randy is a phenomenon but his best has passed, yet he has achieved things no1 else has or possibly will. People like Fedor Emelianenko etc have years left to cement their places, im just going by the way they fought and the impact each man made on MMA

Just my opinion

Mark Kerr
Igor Vovchanchin
Don Frye
Fedor Emelianko
Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera

5 intelligent heavyweights who in their prime could put anyones lights out.

i forgot - change Randy to Mark kerr. The Titan is the very best fighter ive ever seen in a real NHB fight. Before he got really messed up he was as close to unbeatable as anyone has ever been. Nobody could match him

Pride rules arent true MMA, im going back to when the UFC allowed headbutts and kicks to grounded opponents etc. In those days with those rules, Kerr was untouchable

if kerr had better stamina he would have been one of the best, every fight he lost was due to running out of gas imo,the drugs screwed him up back then but i heard hes doing okay these days and is drug free

When Kerr was in his prime he dominated Pride (age 28-30). At that time their were 3 different UFC champs. ....Maurice Smith, Randy Couture, Bas Rutten.  I think Kerr would have beaten all three.

You've got to consider Bas Rutten.  Not the goofy Rutten Report Bas, but the Pancrase badass who dropped people on their ass w/ the liver shot.

Bas is a great guy.  He came to my show and was awesome.  He is so funny and nice.  I just can't imagine him beating the shit out of someone.  Is there any videos on here with him knocking people out

I'd inlcude bas and you'd have to include fedor. I know he hasn't reached his full potential but he scares the shit out of everyone and has dramatically increased interest here in Japan.

i beg to differ. Bas was good, infact he was great, but he couldnt come close to beating the likes of Ken Shamrock, Rickson, Kerr, Fedor or Ruas

How can you possibly justify that statement? He won 20 of his last 21 fights, the other being a draw with Shibuya.

Unlike Ken Shamrock who's lost 4 of his last 5 fights.

That is completely insane!  Yes, he lost to Ken Shamrock before he really knew submissions, but he battered Frank Shamrock (the better fighter of the two brothers).  Bas called out Rickson for quite some time, but Gracie did not want any part of him.  Mark Kerr went to "El Guapo" to learn how to actually fight instead of just using wrestling.  He would be the only person to seriously challenge Fedor.  Ruas has nothing on Bas!

Unlike Ken Shamrock who's lost 4 of his last 5 fights.

ken is in his 40s and about 10 years passed his best, he should have done what Bas did and retire with a reputation. Bas has a great fight ecord no doubt, but he fought maybe 4-5 guys who can be classed as excellent fighters. I just dont think he was one of the best

as for Ruas, in his prime he was unbeatable and Bas would have just fallen at his feet

Has anyone actually seen Rickson fight other than the choke documentary?  Who knows how "great" he was, but I do know he was a fighter in the infancy of the sport... His mystique probably brought a lot of people into the fightgame, which is a good thing I guess.

For me the top five are:

1.Dan Henderson
2.Fedor
3.BJ Penn
4.Nog
5.Shogun

The guys now would completely dismantal the "greats" of the past... But they were the foundation of the sport and helped evolve it to what mma is now.

I saw quite a few tapes of Rickson fighting.  I think Rickson would have done very good in his prime in todays ways of fighting.  He obviously has unreal ground work.  But, from what I saw he could hit really good, but he could really avoiding getting hit really good.  He had a great defense against getting hit.  Plus he is strong and his endurance is just awesome so he can take it to long rounds.  I really think Rickson in his prime could take on just about anyone fighting today.  But, like all the time when people make these comparisons it is impossible to find out.

when he was17 there was only 1 person who could make Rickson tap. Unfortunately he died but he was said to be the best of any Gracie in any generation.
