Ultimate Warrior died from cardiovascular disease.
« on: April 16, 2014, 08:45:27 AM »
Based on how red his face was this is no shocker, however, you would think he was being seen by a Dr at his age (and past career).

PHOENIX (AP) -- Authorities in Phoenix say former pro wrestler The Ultimate Warrior died of cardiovascular disease.
Maricopa County spokeswoman Cari Gerchick says that's the finding from an autopsy conducted Thursday by the county Medical Examiner's Office.
The 54-year-old wrestler's given name was James Hellwig. He collapsed April 8 while walking with his wife to their car at a Scottsdale hotel and was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Scottsdale police have said there were no signs of foul play.

There is a long list of things that can cause a person to have a red face.  Cardiovascular disease is near the bottom of the list.  The vast majority of people with cardiovascular disease show no outward symptoms at all.  That's why cardiovascular disease is known as 'the silent killer'.

Speaking about wrestlers with red faces, I saw Rick Flair at Tampa Airport a few years back.  His face was so red it looked as though he had severe sunburn.  But apparently that's just his typical look.

Facial flushing is a symptom of hypertension and he exhibited shortness of breath when speaking. There are usually some signs of heart disease , however, it is silent when no blood work is done, bp goes unchecked and subtle symptoms are ignored.

Facial flushing is not a direct symptom of Hypertension per se, because Hypertension (high blood pressure) is for the most part a symptomless condition. There are no direct symptoms directly correlated with hypertension.  You can have facial flushing and hypertension, but a direct correlation between the two does not exist.   When it comes to dropping dead from cardiovascular disease itself (heart attack), then there are more correlated signs to watch for when a heart attack takes place.  i.e. onset of chest pain, numbness in arms/legs, shortness of breath, etc.  Some say Warrior exhibited shortness of breath.   If Warrior had gone to a hospital after experiencing shortness of breath, and Doctors ran an ECG and blood enzyme test, it's possible they could have done further tests to find out where specifically the issue was.  Problem is, cardiovascular disease manifests itself in many forms.  i.e. blood clots in arms, legs.  clots in vessels in heart, clots in vessels in brain.  Even malformations of the heart stemming at birth.  Problem is, your basic check up with your Doctor can reveal you are perfectly healthy according to 'the numbers', and an hour later things can suddenly change and you can drop dead.   Doctors rarely perform more advanced screening such as yearly Coronary Calcium Scans on people, unless they are wealthy, high paid athletes, or Presidents.

I do a bi annual coronary calcium score test, anyone whos taken steroids in their life should, it gives you a degree of predictability when assessing future cardiac risk,Blood work and stress tests will usually only become negative when heart disease is at a very late stage, you need to get in early and make lifestyle changes and give yourself every opportunity, in saying that you can do everything properly and be gone as quick you didnt as well in a lot of cases.

I forgot about that guy

This book came out in 86 and I remember buying it when i was in college (completely naive about how these guys actually trained and more importantly what magic "supplements" they were taking)

You should have your sugar levels checked, triglycerides (blood fats), cholesterol, HDL, LDL and their ratios, blood pressure, and cardiac inflammation through a crp test. Resting heart rate is another heart health indicator. The stronger the heart muscle the slower it is at rest. Many people with high blood pressure do flush red, not all.

It might be a silent killer but many times the signs are ignored or not noticed. I know a guy that would get exhausted walking on a treadmill at a good clip quickly.  His response was look a me I lift heavy weights. I'm just not an endurance athlete. I would say having no endurance for this guy was an indicator because he had a heart attack lifting weights.  There are basically two types of heart attacks. Simplistically speaking there is a clog or an electrical short.

Testosterone replacement law suits are flying now because a study has shown they increase the risk of heart attacks.  They are unsure of the mechanism but some speculate it thickens the blood. If this is true imagine the increased risk taking recreational bodybuilding amounts especially if you are in your 40's or 50's?
