Except for his legs, Tom didn't impress at the 1980 Mr Olympia. However, he surprised everyone by coming back in 81 with a much improved upper body and deserved to place ahead of Franco.

He trained in solid powerlifting shoes. That helped him a lot...  not the beiber, fruitcake designer shoes many pros wear today.

In those days we had to wait until the mags came out to see how they  looked. I remember my jaw just dropping when I saw pics of Platz after the '81 Olympia. His upper body really came up especially his back. He had that look like he took his body through hell and back. Just so massive and polished.

Padilla was sheer perfection but Platz was more "wow". I preferred Platz but would have been just as happy if Padilla had won. When they gave it to the bow legged, gyno plague, Sardinia side kick to Arnold I stopped following bodybuilding entirely. First the Arnold fiasco in 1980 and now the worse decision ever in the Mr. Olympia history just a year later. Really turned me off to the whole "sport". I could only imagine how Platz and Padilla must have felt. To put your whole heart and soul into something and only to have the powers that be spit in your face.

I missed the whole Haney/Dorian era. I started following it again when I saw Coleman's "Unbelievable" DVD while staying at a friends house. This was after Coleman's first win and I was pretty taken aback and inspired at his size and especially his strength

I preferred Padilla to Platz in '81.  Platz was incredible, but even with his upper body improvements, his legs still overpowered his upper body by a large margin.  Padilla had much better overall balance.

Danny upset the applecart a few times during the 70's and he paid for it the rest of his career.  He was suppose to have a more prominent role in Pumping Iron too, but TPTB prevented it.

??? ::)

If you rearrange the letters in "shoes" and stare long and hard enough at them they spell "drugs".  And I think Padilla should have won the O in '81.    "Curious" Chris "The Chimp" Dickerson should not have won the Olympia in '82.   I had Zane in first and Dickerson no where near the top ten.  Almost as much a gift as Franco's '81 victory.  Almost.

Paris should have been a multi O winner too. Superb physique, good looks and fairly articulate.  This as opposed a troglodyte like Yates or Coleman and their bigger is bigger approach that makes the schmoes swoon but the public retch.

Padilla, Platz in that order for 1981 Mr. O... I like Franco, but he sucked and didn't deserve it that year...
A gift from his friend (and Mr. O contest promoter that year) Arnie...

Agree, Danny's physique was perfection on a 5' 3" frame.

Yup.  Like a miniaturized Arnold.  Superb.

one of the sadly un-crowned Mr Olympia's.

upper body thickness,crazy.

see him in seminar said he was 5ft7in
& 245lbs in good condition, not bloated.
Man was Huge.

His upper body was massive as he posed
with his track suit bottoms on.
His legs just totally on another level.
very down to earth relaxed and easy to
talk to.

??? No way, not even close. Total lack of symmetry. Just a short dude with big legs, shallow upper body.

A legend indeed, but not Mr O material, no way.

Out of all bodybuilders when it comes to legs tom is the guy i would like to train with, his leg workouts where just insane.

Indeed, however his legs didn't need such intense work to be as developed as they were.

Same here. Padilla looked amazing that year. Franco had no damn business even being the winner thanks to his best friend Arnie.................
