Donald Sterling has Alzheimer's and that's why doctors declared he is incompetent to have a voice in the sale of the L.A. Clippers ... TMZ Sports has learned.

Sources connected with the Sterling family tell TMZ ... the trust agreement that governs the family's ownership of the team provides if 2 qualified doctors determine either Donald or Shelly shows "an inability to conduct business affairs in a reasonable and normal manner" ... they will then be stripped of control over the team.

We're told earlier this month Donald agreed to an examination by 2 prominent neurologists. He underwent extensive tests, including a CT and PET scan. We're told both doctors diagnosed Donald with Alzheimer's and concluded he may have had the disease for as long as 5 years. The doctors both concluded he did not have the ability to conduct the business of the team.

Under the trust agreement ... the doctors' conclusions were enough to strip Donald of control.

Our sources say Donald can appeal the doctors' conclusions to the California Probate Court.

One interesting thing ... TMZ Sports broke the story ... on May 22 Donald signed a letter written to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver relinquishing control of the team to his wife Shelly. It's unclear if Donald's lawyer will now argue the letter is invalid because of Donald's mental incapacity.

The problem for Donald -- if his lawyer argues mental incapacity, under the trust agreement he automatically loses control over the team. So it's a Catch-22 for Donald.

This shit don't matter. I thought it was cancer. You can pay a/your specialist to Dx anything. He's out of mind and body, so he can't be a racist. The point is, the wife and daughter were after VS for $2M in gifts, and she just made the estate $2B. The girl deserves a finder's fee.

This idiot paid 2 billion for just the team itself, and maybe that training facility they built in culver city a few years back but knowing donald he never sales land

He is going to need another billion dollars to build a new stadium in seattle to move his new supersonic team the next 5 years

Puffy and Magic couldn't hold his jockstrap. I'll bet they'd be lucky to come up with $10 mil in cash and $100 mil in loans from "nontraditional financing" between the two of them. They would have had to go crawling to other guys like Ballmer for the majority of the $ to get themselves in.

NBA accepts Clippers sale, cancels Sterling meeting

The NBA has accepted Shelly Sterling's move to sell the Los Angeles Clippers to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, the league announced in a news release Friday evening.

The league now has canceled a June 3 hearing in which the Board of Governors would have voted on the termination of the Sterling Family Trust's ownership of the Clippers. Sterling sold the team without approval from her husband, Donald Sterling, because he was ruled mentally unfit and lost his power to control half of the trust.

The Board of Governors still must approve the sale to Ballmer, and no time frame was mentioned on that vote. Herb Kohl reached a deal to sell the Milwaukee Bucks to a group headed by Wesley Edens and Marc Lasry in mid-April, and the Board of Governors approved the sale one month later.

The full text of the news release:

The NBA, Shelly Sterling and the Sterling Family Trust today resolved their dispute over the ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers. Under the agreement, the Clippers will be sold to Steve Ballmer, pending approval by the NBA Board of Governors, and the NBA will withdraw its pending charge to terminate the Sterlings' ownership of the team.

Because of the binding agreement to sell the team, the NBA termination hearing that had been scheduled for June 3 in New York City has now been cancelled. Mrs. Sterling and the Trust also agreed not to sue the NBA and to indemnify the NBA against lawsuits from others, including from Donald Sterling.

That last line means the NBA probably doesn't have to worry about the lawsuit of more than $1 billion Sterling filed against it. Indemnity means any settlements from lawsuits over this issue would be taken from the Sterling Family Trust.

The National Basketball Players Association sent a letter Friday night to its players praising the move.

"Once formally confirmed, we hope this leads to a speedy resolution of the Donald Sterling matter, and as we have been doing over the past several weeks, will continue to support the league and their lawyers in their efforts to complete the franchise transfer," acting director Ron Klempter said in the letter, obtained by USA TODAY Sports. "From the players' perspective, if the transaction is consummated, it will represent a very positive step toward ending a very unfortunate time for our league."
