From what I was listening to on C-Span radio a few weeks ago, there is plenty to invest.
East Africa has a booming tech industry. Some countries in West Africa could corner the market in salt production. Of course the minerals.
China has invested in Ethiopian factories.
I was watching a vid about diamonds and how Ghana is ranked as one of countries that is hardest to do business in...if they got rid of the corruption and red tape, they might do well.
You also have a lot of Africans who have been educated elsewhere who are coming back and trying to set up businesses and help create better schools and infrastructure.
All is not lost. Just like with Latin America.

nope.

As someone who grew up in Barre's Somalia, the only ways to keep most African countries under control and develop them are not acceptable to the average American. Barre tried to replace tribalism with Socialism (which is in theory a much better fit for Africans than what we have) and the Saudis bankrolled their agricultural program.

And the terrible White Man had to manage those programs because otherwise everything would have been stolen.

Obviously strong-arm dictatorship + central planning + corruption is not a great system but even Oprah can't honestly believe a 21st century western democracy stands a chance in most African countries.

The US didn't exactly help things there.

And it ended with the rebels burning the factory to the ground and executing all the trained, educated Somalis who were trying to help their country. Nowadays in that part of Somalia they are worse off than they were 50 years ago.

there is no happy ending.

Why can't Africans just sit back and let white people put something nice together for them? Something like South Africa and Zimbabwe before Africans took over.

Alternatively take McCarthur's administration of Japan after World War II. Their country was obliterated and politically bankrupt. It was in similar shape to your average African country.

But to make that happen in Africa, you'd need Japanese living there. Unfortunately, they have to make it work using Africans. That's the challenge. ;)

This is what I don't understand about Kim Jong-un. Why wouldn't he want to open up his country to development and grow it? Wouldn't it only boost his power and resources? ???

I would think being located between China and South Korea alone would be very valuable? He could upgrade the Presidential DC-3 to a modern Boeing Jet.

Their country of origin should rescue them.  America, Russia, Great Britain, Israel, Canada, Japan, Australia (they probably don't have any guns) should stay out of this mess.

No. It would undermine the sole purchase he has on the people as the unique fount of knowledge, wisdom, generosity, and power. The cult of personality is stronger than American MSM makes it out to be. A few public military demonstrations doesn't begin to cover it. Everyone's terrified of leaving their house after dark because they could get arrested for spying or sabotage. Everyone snitches on each other and they open a file whenever someone does it; next thing they're yanking you out of bed at 3 a.m. and doing sleep deprivation between beatings and questioning. It's real bad. If he opens it up, his game is over. Same with his dead dad and grandfather. They run a stalinist system, worse than anything anyone can imagine. Horror doesn't begin to describe it. And I got all this from a North Korean who fled to the West.

They could if they wanted to. Their governments are flush with diamond cash from foreign multinationals who buy exploitation rights to mine there.

But why would they? They know the people just want more. If they give them a good standard of living, where does it end? They'd have to empty their coffers just to provide a basic living standard. And when the money ran out, the people would revolt, as they always do when the good times are over. It makes more sense to keep a loyal army that's well fed and surround themselves with monied government officials who are loyal to a fault. The people will survive off the food bins the UN sends there once or twice a month.

Insane, wow... I've seen a documentary or two but it's hard to even imagine that.

From his prospective though, why wouldn't he rather be on the level of someone like the President of South Korea? He must also be mentally ill to some degree.

Same with Saddam Hussain, he would rather die in a "spider hole" than just cut the bullshit. He could have opened Iraq up and emulated Saudi Arabia or something.

I'm sizing up Obama and asking myself as the dictator of a country with total power whether I'd like to be in his place instead.

I'm gonna go with no.

Somalia is a different animal. there are more countries in East Africa than Somalia.

But, as was alluded to, doing business in Africa by American companies is hard, because of human rights liolations, certain dictators..whereas China has no concerns about those things...and believe France doesn't either.

Pretty much.

China is strictly business.

France has a colonial background on the continent, so they can always fall back on their historical mercantilism in the regions they have contracts with.

America has no commercial ties to any country south of Egypt other than mining rights. And they're hamstrung by the political millstone of human rights considerations, since they've always made that their selling point for exporting war to other countries.

That's how Stalin did it. If you ran away from battle, your family would be shot. Worked great!

Ive read that African countries are hesitant or outright hostile to do business with the west because of the history of colonialism and corporate abuse.  In their eyes, Chinese money isn't tainted.  A very naive perspective if you ask me but somewhat understandable.

China doesn't insist on using the world bank, or food aid, or any of that shit.

The Chinese buy the Mugabes of the continent gold plated bentleys and guns, put millions in their swissbank accounts .. And in exchange china gets the mineral rights for 1% of their actual worth.

They also build factories , roads etc to process the ores etc but these are run by Chinese who don't trust Africans not to fuck up.
