Pulp Fiction
Shawshank Redemption
Apollo 13
The Fugitive
Rocky
Die Hard

Probably a bunch more. The Fugitive is one that has stopped me in my tracks for 2 hours more than any other movie.

Of course. Every Coen film, really. Some better than others, but all better than most shit.

Glengarry Glen Ross never gets old, easily one of the greatest acting ensembles ever. Of course, it's never on tv.

In 'No Country For Old Men' there is something that stands out audio-wise amongst practically all other movies.

Can anyone say what it is without re-watching it?

Yes. I haven't seen it a few years but when I watched it for the first time on DVD I rewatched it in its entirety just to see if I was right in thinking it didn't have any music.

The only thing I remember was a light, building-intensity droning sound when Tommy Lee Jones' character visits the motel at night to inspect the Llewelyn crime scene.

They could have purchased the "music" for the entire movie for $3 off of any royalty free music site...unless there are period ambient radio music sounds somewhere in the movie that they had to buy the rights to.

Interesting. I swear I just guessed, from memory, but I did look it up after. Three scenes had the faintest music is all, one of which you mentioned.

One movie with a fantastic soundtrack that was like an opera musically, with almost every character having their recurring theme music, was Leone's "Once upon a time in the West"...BUT I remember the opening with the 3 hired guns waiting for Bronson had no music for around 10 minutes until Bronson's harmonica broke the musical silence. For 10 minutes, other than sparse talking, they had telegraph machine, creaking windmill, buzzing fly....as a kind of background 'music'.

Does PT Anderson do this a lot? I remember TWBB being pretty quiet as well.

a masterpiece. i really need to get this on blu.

i've been trying not to watch it until i do, but a few weeks back i cracked and threw the dvd on. i was worried the film might not hold up compared to my first viewing. i needn't have. it was even more better than i remembered it being.

another i'm holding out from watching until i eventually upgrade is THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD. man, i can't wait to see that in 1080p :P

Has to be one of this century's finest films. Second best western ever, only because nothing will ever top Unforgiven for me.

I had to rewatch watch a few clips but Anderson definitely punctuates dramatic scenes with the absence of music in that movie.

In Boogie Nights he did just the opposite in the dramatic scene where Jesse's Girl is blaring, the camera locks on Walhberg while he seemingly freezes while getting the courage to leave... as the music amplifies it's all you can hear. It's almost like he used music as a type of silence to block out everything that is going on except Wahlbergs internal thoughts. That several second shot could have been switched with complete silence and had a similar effect.

That was actually on cable yesterday, excellent film. I guess I was specifically thinking about Blood, and maybe Punch Drunk Love. I remember Magnolia has that Aimee Mann song during the montage.
