Roger, the pictures you put up illustrate a regular squat clean. In a power clean there is just a shallow dip of the legs to rack the weight.

I can predict how this thread will go with bodybuilders. First they will pontificate that the olympic lifts are so complicated only those with circus amazing skills can do them. The next guy will say why would you do them? What body part do they develop?  The guy after them will say I never do them but since I bench 400lbs I know I am capable of doing 450lbs.

The olympic lifts develop power one of the most important athletic attributes there is. Power is a separate entity from strength yet related to a certain extent. Everything from sprinting, jumping, throwing a punch and tackling an opponent is power related. You can be really strong yet be lacking in power. An explosion of strength and how quickly you can release strength is what you need in most athletics. A 500lbs bencher punching a heavy bag like he's tapping a pillow shows a lack of power. Power lifting should be called strength training and the Olympic lifts should be called power lifting.

I know in my younger years when ever I added the power clean to my workout my sprinting speed took a jump.  Ben Johnson's coach had him doing heavy weight in the squat, bench and power clean. He stopped the power clean when the weights got so heavy he feared an injury could happen. I have never seen anyone who could clean a decent weight who was slow.

Power  :D

Do you have any tips on practicing the movement coach? Especially the pull and drop part?

1. Start each session with technique first with either PVC, the bar or 5-10lb training plates....RDL, RDL to shrug, RDL to high pull, RDL to full triple extension (ankles, knees and hips open and locked out) then the entire movement catching the bar high on the chest.

2. There isn't just one pull, there are two. First pull from the floor accelerated through the second pull into the triple extension.

3. As you go into the triple extension, shrug/high pull the inertia of the bar is coming up and then the drop below the bar.

4. Catch the bar high on the chest, elbows up, bar on finger tips as you drop into the squat.

5. From the top of the shoulder. bar should be over the hips, knees and ankles.

I wrote this a couple of years ago. One of the things I hate in high school and some college programs are unnecessary need to test a 1 or 3RM on a clean.

Even though we do O-lifts in our programs we NEVER test the PC or HC.

switched up training methods past couple weeks.

hit 275 and 250 for 20, then couple barely get 225 for 15, then a measly 185 for two sets of 20... then all the other stuff for sets of 20. helluva ego blow when you gotta use 50% of what you normally use. lol

Sounds very similar to what you would hear at a Crossfit Seminar...I'm just saying...especially the pvc pipe stuff.

My personal best was a 290lbs c+j and a 345 pause bench for a total of 635 back in high school at 195 lbs.  Since then I only do C+Js when I do Crossfit oriented workouts, which is sporadically.

It was definitely a power clean, my technique sucked back then.
