The problem with gyms today...
« on: May 07, 2014, 09:21:47 AM »
I'm traveling next week so just googled gyms in the city I'll be staying in.

Found a Powerhouse gym in the area. Went to their website. And here's what they have:

-Huge Cardio Deck  - Zumba   - Spinning   - Step Classes   - Kick Boxing   - Yoga & Pilates
- Extravagant Locker Rooms    - Tons of Free Parking    - Juice Bar    - Pro Shop   - Child Care

Notice, NOT ONE MENTION OF FREE WEIGHTS!

Seriously, WTF!

Powerhouse used to be the hardcore chain. Now they're embarrassed to even mention they have free weights.

Or who knows, maybe this new location doesn't have any weights.

It's a sad commentary of lifting when so many gyms shy away from admitting they actually have weights in them and have to promote "Extravagant Locker Rooms."

OK, rant over.

Sad to say but this is what pays the bills only a small part of the population like to train hardcore bodybuilding and they are not enough to keep a gym open, try searching for hardcore and powerlifting gyms you might have better luck.

so what? gym's aren't charities. it's a business. and the people who want hardcore, powerlifting, bodybuilding gyms are few and far between.. and they usually don't want to pay for it.

you want a hardcore gym that caters to a niche market? then be prepared for you and your buddies to pay $150/month to keep the gym open, because it'll only have a few hundred members at most, and the shit will be broken pretty often and stay broken for weeks till it's fixed because the gym can't afford maintence.

Dude, chill out.

All I was looking for was a gym with free weights. According to their website and photos they posted, they don't have free weights at a Powerhouse Gym.

I didn't question their business model. Didn't say it was a bad business move. didn't say it was bad they have other types of equipment or free parking or a kid zone. Didn't even say I was looking for a hardcore gym.

Just commented it's sad that in today's day and age, gyms don't have any free weights. Or if they do, they don't advertise it.

And I never knew gyms that had free weights only catered to charity cases. I'll have to reassess my priorities when looking for places to lift :-)

The most offensive thing a gym can do isn't fail to stock free weights or vertical leg-press machines. It's to designate an entire area as exclusive to female members only, with equipment and facilities only they can use. My gym inexplicably opted to close down half the leg section in order to section off the new area for women only.

I don't follow that logic. You wouldn't make a part of the gym only available to people from a specific racial group, people of one sexual orientation, or religion. Why is it acceptable in 2014 to make a Womens' Only section? Already having womens' gyms is outdated enough. But to segregate people based on gender in the same building? And then they wonder why people don't take them seriously when they say they want to be treated as equals?

Chain gyms are junk, save for a few Gold's like the ones in Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
