Anyone have experience with Septic Tanks?
« on: May 07, 2014, 09:41:11 AM »
I know the great Falcone has some, but who else has a Septic tank and what can a homeowner expect differently than a home connected to a sewer?  maintenance issues?  things to watch out for?   I've never had a house with one and not sure if they are a pain in the ass to have or not.

Great idea so if you ever pissed me off I can come over to your place and throw you in the septic tank.

Generally no problem...Just don't flush a bunch of garbage down them(tampons, napkins, rubbers etc), only shit, piss and toilet paper. When you sell the property you will have to have it pumped out (6-9 hundred bucks). I've been on septic for 15 years, no problems.

U won't even notice a difference. If u have a leach field don't drive your car or heavy machinery over it. And wow 6-900 bux to pump a septic. Wow. Where do u live?  Pa n Ohio about 300 bux

I've had one at three houses I've owned and never had a problem.  If your looking at a property make sure you have it inspected by someone with experience especially if it is old.  It's also better to have it pumped every two to three years. I have never paid over $300 and $260 has been about average.

Will probably dig my own since contractors want retarded money.  By the time I paid the digging for septics, site works, and utilities trenching I'd own 1/2 a light excavator or a cheap backhoe, never mind land clearing costs.  But I digress.

The local council will have installation (and inspection) all clearly defined.  Suppliers can give installation advice too but council will obviously have the final say.  When my family sold the house I grew up in (on septics) we had to spend 10k to upgrade prior to sale due to changes in council regulations.  Some places seem to be favoring composting septics over traditional, so if they're going to require it in the future you might do well to spend a bit more to install a more advanced system while the hole is dug.  I've also read a few horror stories about new systems tho so I'm inclined toward the more proven age-old methods.

Idk if or to what degree you can compact earth over the tank and field.  I remember a depressed portion in the yard at that house tho.  If you've got doubts about settlement then maybe don't do killer landscaping too soon.

Obviously check on power, phone, water, and gas availability if you're looking at rural land.  Power here is wildly expensive to extend.  I'd be interested to hear what your research leads you to discover and which system you prefer since I'm gonna have to make my own decision as well.

yes a septic can get backed up, not sure if i buy into all the septic baggies that contain enzymes to break up the shit in the septic

i have a septic at my house and the leach feilds are in the front yard lol. i think there is some holes in the pipe because one area is leaching a bit to close to the house. but it hasnt got anywhere. last time the septic guys were out pumping it  they couldnt find the pipe, waste of money of pumping it out too. we thought it was a problem because of the sess pool in the front yard about 4-5 foot diameter. but no it wasnt a problem it just stays up like a little stinky pond no big deal.

i was just worried it was gonna start backing up into the house but you can see bubbles in it so everything is shitting right through nicely

Number one thing is to use simple Scott brand toilet paper.  Others don't break down as easily and you have to pump more.

I've always had septic.  Yes.  Septic safe TP.  NO kleenex, or other stuff.  Garbage disposals are not recommended, but I use one and only flush down random particles.  Never any problems.  Local ordinances require pumping every 3 years.  We have to show proof with our property taxes.  We've always had conventional and I hear the mound systems are prone to problems and don't last "forever".  Holding tanks are nightmares.  You should also be careful with detergents and not use bleach (kills the little critters in it).  Not a good idea to have trees in the area where they could potentially grow roots to cause issues.  Always ask the 'Ye 'ol Honeywagon' to be the first stop on the route, otherwise the tanker can be too heavy for some driveways AND it stinks to high heaven when pumping.  Current homeowner should provide maintenance/pumping records prior to your purchase.

Are you already in the house, or looking to buy?

As already said, get an inspection before buying. I think this is pretty much a given.

It's not so much the tank that is the big deal, it's the leaching field. I had to have a whole new field put in. It's a big project.

My system goes from the tank, to a pumping chamber out to the field. Ever since the new field was put in, I've had no problems with it. However, I did need to get the pump replaced as it sh*t the bed. (Wasn't really top of the line. Now it's a much better pump.)

It's generally a good idea to pump the tank out about once a year, just to clean out sludge that builds up.

If you have occasion to install a new system, the aerobic systems now available do an amazing thing.  Overnight a small air pump bubble air through the effluent.  This combined with a different variety of microbes (aerobic bacteria) makes the waste-water decompose much more quickly with no odor.  Then around 5 am sprinklers irrigate your lawn, garden, or what ever with the treated waste-water.

Really kind of nifty.

This was discussed before and i believe its a myth.  dont even worry about it.  do this as i did.  Put a cottennelle or similar wet wipe in a bowl of water on your kitchen counter or wutever.  Wait a day or so.  it literally disinegrates.  It won't cause any problem in ur tank imo. We've used them for years w no problems.

That sounds really eco friendly.  What kind of $kaching$ are we talking?

I don't know the costs.  Another poster here I know in real life was involved one time in home improvement talk shows and this vendor was heavily promoted.  On first hearing there is a lot of YUCK factor.  (Watering your garden with treated sewage!!??...YUCK)

It works well however.   I think they put you in touch with local installers.

consumer reports is bullshit more than half the time. They have shoddy research n writers n I don't think the fucking editors even check the content of wut the shitty reporters/writers submit.
Of course the wipes have to be tuff initially or they would rip apart wen u use them. If the dumbass tester wanted an apples to apples test he would have put a shitload no pun intended of tp in the vortex or blender cuz people don't use one sheet of tp they uses to. But u will use one sheet of a wipe. The ton of tp would also muck up the blender etc. I'm shocked the dumbass didn't do a overnight test. Another example of shoddy testing from consumer bullshit reports. The wipes break down to nothing in a day or so. Totally disintegrate.

Ok the second story I believe. If your system involves the wipe running thru a pump or something immediately after flushing then I could see them causing a problem because they take a while to break down. In this regard they seem almost more suited for septic tanks than a general public sewer line. Just do the water bowl test. After a day or so it dis ingrates to the point u can not even pick it up
