He was always a producer, from the mid-80s onward. His rap flame never existed, because he was never a good rapper. He never claimed to be. He was good at communicating the record label's expectations to his lyrical crew (which Eazy E rounded up - not him) and getting them to put it down on paper. Then he got behind the soundboard and made it sound good, although some of NWA's songs were pure crap. His luck was coming into an industry that was new with little competition at the time (gangsta rap) and capitalizing on it by churning out as many albums as he could. Then someone referred Snoop Dogg to him and he saw the guy had real talent as a writer/singer. The Chronic made Dre what he is. After that it was a matter of setting up his own label (Aftermath) and just producing album after album for other artists. Then his career started to wane in the late 90s and he discovered Eminem, who reignited it. He found his niche and beat it to death. Unlike Ice Cube, P Diddy, Ice-T, 50 Cent, Eminem, or Jamie Foxx, he has no other talents besides producing (for example, acting or business models). Even the Beats by Dre concept wasn't his.

Let's give him credit for going a very long way with very little and having no education to speak of. But he's no genius. The guy can barely string 5 words together. A lot of people helped him out, and he doesn't give them their dues.
