It's not really a beard. It's manicured stubble with a bit of definition to resemble the outline of a beard.
He's losing his hair and size. Has to compensate somehow and switch up his look a bit. It's just a very unoriginal one. If you're going to grow a beard, then grow one. That look he's wearing is in every corporate office and Iphone store at the mall.
