« on: May 11, 2014, 08:50:55 PM »
A few "old timers" might remember Mr. Wiltse, aka "Maylen the Magician". Only met him once in 1981, a real character but he knew his stuff. May he rest in Peace.

Wiltse, Maylen 11/17/1931 ~ 05/02/2014 OCEANSIDE -- Maylen Faye Wiltse of Oceanside, formerly of La Jolla and Salinas, passed away on May 2, 2014. He was born in Austin, Minnesota on November 17, 1931 to Ruth and Milton Wiltse. His parents, for a time, owned and operated one of the finest bakeries in Austin until he was in his early teens. His family migrated to Salinas, California in the late 1940s. Maylen played high school sports and raced cars. He began lifting weights with the original Muscle Beach crowd and later at Venice Beach. He competed for Mr. California several times, placing third one year and won Mr. San Diego. Maylen opened his first gym, La Jolla Health Studio in the early '60s. Maylen, being a natural coach and teacher, became very involved with the sports programs in the area schools at every level. In the late '60s, he eventually convinced San Diego Chargers head coach Sid Gillman, that his training programs would improve his players. Maylen was the first paid strength coach in the NFL. He continued his career in fitness after closing his gym and trained people in both Coast and Frog's gyms. He spent his final years of training and teaching people at First Class Fitness in Oceanside. The members and owner of First Class Fitness took exceptional care of the old coach in his twilight years, which is quite a tribute to the spirit and fondness they held for him. A private celebration of Maylen's life will be held on May 18, 2014, from 12-4 p.m. Please contact snortham@roadrunner.com for details.

;D a lot of the old time bodybuilders were mentored by those that came before them. remember reading how joe abbenda took dennis tinnerino under his wing in his quest for the aau mister america, training him in his hole in the wall home gym.
