It actually backfired because the government can't really stop the striking workers. The Marikana Massacre didn't achieve anything.

Just a fucked country. A few dynasties will survive, foreign companies and a few South Africans will make a fortune from the mineral wealth, politicians will continue to fuck country while stealing public money and townships will grow, bloated by the addition of the white poor.

Look at what the Arabs have managed with mineral wealth. Still mostly shitholes but at least they aren't known for crime, tribal warfare and squandering money.
