As we take this time to honour the great Maya Angelou, let us also take time to give thanks for Getbig's own honorary Wegro Poet Laureate, Toka Swola who dazzled us with such verse as "You've got to B swol to Cswol". But also admonished us to never cupcake, nor lolipop.

I liked her a lot and she will be missed.

She was an atheist and a gun owner actually.  Carried a gun on her at all times and was proud to do so.

Have you ever fired your weapon?

I was in my house in North Carolina. It was fall. I heard someone walking on the leaves. And somebody actually turned the knob. So I said, “Stand four feet back because I’m going to shoot now!” Boom! Boom! The police came by and said, “Ms. Angelou, the shots came from inside the house.” I said, “Well, I don’t know how that happened.”

Sad news indeed. Maya Angelou was 86 years old. She was a very accomplished and well respected author and poet. What a loss.

I met her when I was 17.  Even then I recall her poetry being just mediocre.  Seemed like a lot of the praise she received was because she was a black woman.

Langston Hughes OTH was a true American poet genius.

''I was so sick last night I
Didn't hardly know my mind.
So sick last night I
Didn't know my mind.
I drunk some bad licker that
Almost made me blind.''
 Langston Hughes (1902-1967),

Like so many "beat poets" before and cRap arteests after, she was so awful that I would neither read nor recite her drivel.  This doesn't mean she was a bad person, just a lousy poet.

The emperor's new clothes describes it perfectly.

And a damn great orator. He would walk rings around today's politicians and orators.

Damn straight.   Notice I said great writer and not great black writer.  The man had a deepness of spirit few writers have.

By the way,  I'm in Oakland CA if any getbiggers want to throw hands.  Oakland beat my Tigers and I'm in a foul mood.

As far as lyrical ability, I rank her just slightly below the guy who wrote "Twinkle Twinkle little star."

Stand for something, be a different colour than white, and make an edgy poem about something topical at the time= genius with unparralleled skill in that field  ::)

I don't care much for poetry but I thought her novels were pretty good.

I suspect she was inspired by an earlier 2nd amendment advocate.
