Too sad. Our generation's Ted Williams. Like Coach said, the guy was pure class. RIP.

This will become a sad trend with retired baseball players dying young. Tobacco use has unfortunate consequences. RIP Tony.

I thought MLB banned it in the 80s. On the field, anyway.

From 1989 sports Illustrated issue

Will Clark
" I always advised Tony to stop eating so much and chew chewing tobaccos. Tobacco makes you lose weight, but Tony kept eating damn near lost ever hair. Ive always relied on a good diet not much chew, I tried to avoid that meat because of the iron"

Nice post Falcon!

No shit - I still have that exact Topps baseball card in my collection somewhere in the basement, I think. Along with my treasured Mark McGwire rookie card. All told, worth about 10 cents. I'll be rich someday.

McGwire tore it up in 87! Was he on roids back then? He looked kinda thin.

RIP  Tony Gwynn!!!

I'd bet against it, and he still hit, what, 49?

Just like Bonds, dude was a Hall shoo-in who needlessly fucked up his legacy.

he didn't fuck it up.. MLB fucked it up for him.

MLB shit on all the guys who saved MLB from going the way of professional bowling.

what business do senators/congress have in investigating baseball, and questioning and requiring former players to testify before congress?

what does the hall of fame mean?

doesn't mean shit to me.

you think he'll be forgotten if he's not in it? I doubt it.

you know many times I've checked to see who's in the hall of fame? zero. you know how many guys are in there that I could care less about? a lot.

what does any 'hall of fame' mean? aren't they already famous? didn't they already play? and break records? and stand out amongst their peers?

in a league in which PED's were used widely, a player who used PED's broke records and is shamed for it? who'd he compete against? weren't the majority of other players also on PED's? why didn't they break the same records?

the hall of fame means jack-shit to most people... whether it's MLB, NFL, NBA, Nascar, WWE, Rock n Roll, etc... you get voted in by your peers? no you don't... a group of guys decides on whether or not you made an impact? no they don't.

Thanks for your input. If it doesn't mean anything to you, it's obviously irrelevant. Perhaps you should let them know so they can tear the place down and end the silly charade.

I had the rookie cards of all my baseball heroes of youth; Jose Canseco, Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, Doc Gooden and my favorite of all -- Darryl Strawberry.

LOL! When I was a kid I thought I had the best collection ever and I would have a fortune when they all retired and went to the HOF. Every single one of those players fucked up in one way or another and their value sunk like a boat anchor. Eventually, I couldn't even give those cards away and they all ended up at a Goodwill.

You don't play baseball, so it's normal not to care about the Hall of Fame

But...

The HOF means a LOT to MLB players. It's one of their goals in life. They see it as a great achievement.

I played baseball for 14yrs and was scouted by florida state and AZ... neither offered scholarships.
