U.S. flag is a "threat to Muslim community"

WEBSTER, Texas -- A Webster man says his apartment complex manager told him his American flag was a “threat to the Muslim community,” and that he has to take it down. But he’s not giving up without a fight.

Stepping onto Duy Tran's balcony in Webster, one thing is clear: "It means a lot to me," he said.

He's talking about his American flag that he proudly put up when he moved in just a few days ago. But then an apartment manager at the Lodge on El Dorado told him he had to take it down.

"What really stunned me is that she said it’s a threat towards the Muslim community,” said Tran. “I’m not a threat toward anybody."

We tried to ask a manager if that's exactly what was said, but she just handed us a statement, refused to answer any questions, and called an officer to escort us off the property, before we could press any further:

"While the Lodge on El Dorado admires our resident's patriotism, we must enforce our property rules and guidelines. Such guidelines maintain the aesthetics of our apartment community and provide for the safety of all residents. The apartment community already proudly displays our country's flag in a safe and appropriate manner at the entrances to our community."

But we saw other patriotic symbols hanging from other balconies in the complex, and Tran doesn't plan to budge.

"I’m gonna leave my flag there, as an American, until she shows me proof that I don’t have the right to leave my flag there," said Tran.

To Tran it's about so much more than stars and stripes.

"I have friends that died for this country," he said.

So he says this fight is the least he can do.

We have not heard of any residents complaining about any flags at the complex, or any of the patriotic items we saw. In fact, we spoke to several neighbors who say they want Tran's flag to stay.

I think this story is likely bullshit.

The apartment complexes I've had the misfortune to live in never let you hang anything this big off of your balcony:

Did the apartment complex manager or administrators deny the tenant's claim? They did not. In fact they refuse to respond to the reporter and promptly kicked them out.

Not everything is a lie or an exaggeration and your personal experiences have nothing to do with this situation.

You are a goof.

According to the article, management presented this written statement:
"While the Lodge on El Dorado admires our resident's patriotism, we must enforce our property rules and guidelines. Such guidelines maintain the aesthetics of our apartment community and provide for the safety of all residents. The apartment community already proudly displays our country's flag in a safe and appropriate manner at the entrances to our community."

That seems to back up my explanation, does it not?  Big complexes seem to always have these sorts of rules, unfortunately.

And I know that you have some issues with logic and all but I'm telling you that just because management didn't engage the reporter over the tenant's claim that he was told to remove the flag because of Muslim concerns, that doesn't mean shit about why the flag actually needed to be removed from his balcony because there are more than a couple of reasons why they might do this (not answer the reporter's questions, that is).  The most likely, I'm thinking, is that by not responding about the Muslim angle, they were simply covering for some idiot manager that spouted some BS to a tenant because he thought the tenant was a foreign-looking type who'd just accept any old answer without question.

Shoot, maybe it's simpler than that.  Maybe management's main concern is keeping all its units full of rent-paying folks (shocking, right?) and didn't want to make any statements that might make its Muslim tenants feel like looking for a different place to rent.

Who knows?  What I do know is that even if some manager told tenant Duy Tran that he couldn't display the flag off of his balcony because it might anger Muslims (and I don't see much reason to doubt this), that's not the real reason he can't display it.

Of course, that means your post pretty much amounts to "Some apartment manager out in Texas sucks", so I get why you're having a sad, lol.

BTW, this same article was posted on the G&O board and folks there quickly came to the same conclusion I did, lol.

Maybe you should go over there and try to lecture them about how much more you know about your adopted homeland than they do.

I, for one, would enjoy seeing them rip you a new one "G&O-style".

The tenant doesn't look like an American to me. Just sayin.

FWIW, Dario probably doesn't either.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, lol.

If the manager did in fact say such a thing, it was really stupid - regardless of what her true motive was or what the actual rule is. Too bad the tenant didn't record the conversation with her.

America is facing some serious issues as a nation - the next 10 years or so could be really interesting
The next POTUS will have a possible opportunity to tilt the S.Court one way or the other - all the social issues facing America are going to really strain this great nation
states rights are being eroded, courts are over ruling states and amendments that the PEOPLE voted on and passed etc... going to be a lot of social upheaval as America changes in the future
