Oh and also, I notice Alpine conveniently overlooked the fact that we know his watch pictor was a (not so) clever fake.

Kind of kills the validity of the Merc pictor as well....

Guess I was referring to any crazy expensive brand. I'm ignorant here, it was the only one that came to mind.

Explain what made you want to own these watches. Obviously, it was not to impress, since that's what you've already posted.

Just those 2 models.
I dont like huge wrist watches because they look silly and I have small wrists  :P
They are timeless designs and the only models i wanted.

A sense of contentment that I achieved the first one at 25yrs old (no gift or inheritance but my hard graft)
Something I will wear and keep for probably most of my life.

I feel the same way. I bought my first vintage seamaster for 900$ when I was 22, I bought my first Panerai at 24 and a 42mm Planet Ocean at 25.

Its a great feeling working for something, and realizing the hard work with something physical. A lot of people wouldnt understand though.

That's nice. Seems like you have good reason to appreciate these watches. They are symbolic for you.

I have my late father's Bulova watch from the 1950's in a drawer someplace. It doesn't work. I should probably throw it out. I thought I'd have it repaired someday, but I never did.

Alpine is having an extended menstruation cycle here.

His whole act of "I do not show off my wealth" has gotten predictive pages ago.

The truth will be, there is no wealth to show off.

Its a combination of craftsmanship, style and of course the name.

A high quality automatic Swiss watch will last you the rest of your life with proper servicing.

Is 7k+ an acceptable price to spend on a watch simply because you will never have to buy another watch in your life if you don't want to? Absolutely not.

But, it is the combination of all three that make it a worthwhile purchase for some. I don't own a Rolex, yet, but I do have watches from comparable watchmakers though.

Ok. I thought they cost tens of thousands.

Oh some do. Easily.

My watches were bought used, the first omega was very used, about 40 years used. And it still ran like new... goes to show the quality.

Very good.

One thing related. I've been noticing one strange trend in a process of getting more and more sucessfull - old friends (who aren't doing as well) start to dissapear. And not because of my fault, I've tried to keep in touch numerous times, but it seems like they start avoiding me. I've always thought it'd be vice versa, but now I see that people who are doing as well (or better) start paying attention to me and these who aren't - start to be distant. Only reason I can think of is that they doesn't want to acknowledge the fact that someone out "of them" turned out to be smarter and they hate seeing me with a better car, higher quality female, etc... I'd like to be wrong tho' as I've always valued these people more or less.
Have you noticed anything like that over the these years? (I'm 28 currently, so I'm basically just starting to get a real momentum).

Haven't read any other responses to this or following posts, so sorry if I'm repeating something.

Your friends might be jealous. That's a possibility. However, another likely possibility is that your friends don't have anything in common with you. Your interests will shift towards the interests of affluent people, interests they can't develop because they don't have the money. They probably can't afford to go out with you. Money doesn't make people bad or good, it just changes their interests and lifestyle.

I work in finance. I meet a lot of people. There are a lot of low six figure types wearing Rolex. After that IWC seems to be the most popular. The rich like jaeger or lesser know but large automatics. The billionaires I have met couldn't give a shit either way. For instance one guy I know who runs his family's family office looks like a hobo. They sold a business in the 80's for 300m. Personally I bought a cheap omega in 2006 but I only wear it to tell time during meetings. At weekend I use my phone.

Rolex must have inspired the phrase 'as ugly as the face of a cheap watch'

That is because you are trailer trash and "untermensh" , wealthy people do not tend to associate themselves with the skidmarks of humanity.

It may be true... Other replies a food for thought too..
Interests probably've really changed, I'll have to accept that I can't offer anything to them (that they'd be able to accept) and they doesn't have anything to offer to me anymore. On another hand - I'd probably be pretty unhappy too if I'd see some of my old friends doing way better than me. Unhappy about myself, obviously.
