I don't know how it is where you all live, but in my neck of the woods, NYC, it's reached epidemic proportions.

Apparently, you can be a 5'5" 200lb woman, but if you put on running shoes, socks, tights and a spandex tanktop, athlete status is conferred.

I never discredit a fat person who is trying to work out. I was just running yesterday and a fat girl was jogging in the opposite direction. I gave her the runner wave acknowledgement and she looked at me like I was trying to pick her up.  ::)
