Poll: Obama worst president since WWII

President Obama is the worst president since World War II, according to a Quinnipiac poll released Wednesday.

The poll finds that 33 percent of voters say Obama is the worst since the war, with George W. Bush trailing in second place at 28 percent.
The only other president in double digits, at 13 percent, is Richard Nixon, who resigned from office after the Watergate scandal.

The results raise the possibility that voters are choosing the presidents who are freshest in their memory. Or they could just think that this century has produced historically bad presidents.

Obama ran in 2008 as a change from the deeply unpopular Bush, but the poll finds that in a head-to-head matchup, more voters now think Obama is a worse president than Bush. Forty percent say Obama is worse than Bush, while 39 percent say he is better.

Obama won his 2012 reelection with a healthy 4-percentage-point margin over Mitt Romney in the national popular vote, but voters are now feeling some regret on that choice. Forty-five percent say the country would be better off if Romney had won, compared to 38 percent who say it would be worse.

That includes 10 percent of Democrats and 47 percent of independents who say they now wish the Republican nominee had won.

"Over the span of 69 years of American history and 12 presidencies, President Barack Obama finds himself with President George W. Bush at the bottom of the popularity barrel," Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, said in a statement.

"Would Mitt have been a better fit? More voters in hindsight say yes."

Following the healthcare.gov rollout, failures at Veterans Affairs and other problems, voters say the Obama administration is not competent to run the government, 54 to 44 percent.

The president is in negative territory on a slew of key issues, from the economy (40 percent approve) to foreign policy (37 percent) and healthcare (40 percent) to terrorism (44 percent).

The one issue area where Obama gets positive marks is the environment, where voters approve of Obama’s handling, 50 to 40 percent.

In another sliver of good news in an otherwise brutal poll for Obama, his approval rating ticked up from a low of 38 percent in December, to 40 percent.

More than half of all Americans, 51 percent, say Obama cares about their needs and problems, and voters are evenly split at 48 percent - on whether Obama is honest and trustworthy.

The survey carries a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.

The financial collapse wasn't Bush's fault....but his response to it kept this country from coming completely unglued.  It was probably the best work of his Presidency and to this day he doesn't get the credit he deserves.    People do not realize how close we came to losing everything...I work at a wirehouse firm...there were major wall street firms mapping scenarios based on the US slipping into complete anarchy with food riots or the US becoming a completely totalitarian state until the crisis passed.   That was truly some scary shit...if you were paying attention.

That said...Obama is a terrible president.  Nobody wants to see the most powerful man in the world stomping his feet and throwing a hissy fit like a 12 year-old girl.  Do what every other president has had to do...swallow your pride, shut your fucking mouth and accept the fact that you have to make deals.

Romney had a different view and stance on the same policies every time the wind blew.  Try running a real candidate and not a liberal with an "R" besides their name.  Maybe the outcome would be different.

Obama's Terrible Approval Numbers Are Terrible

When asked a question often discussed with dread at family Thanksgiving dinners, a plurality of voters — 33 percent — believe President Obama (or "Nobummer," amirite?) is the worst president since World War II. In second place on the same question was George W. Bush with 28 percent. These are the numbers you will read in several headlines today. The thing is, the "worst president since World War Two" results aren't really the worst numbers for the president in the Quinnipiac poll from which they're drawn.

Let's address the headlines first. In the Quinnipiac poll, Obama finds himself among a handful of post-war presidents who garner polarizing reactions from voters. Those presidents, roughly, are Kennedy, Reagan, and the three most recent: Obama, Clinton, and George W. Bush. When asked to choose the best post-war president, for instance, Ronald Reagan snagged 35 percent of voters. But 18 percent thought it was Kennedy. Clinton took 18 percent of voters, and 8 percent think it's Obama, putting him in fourth place. (George W. Bush, for what it's worth, had just 1 percent of voters on this question).

If you look at the political breakdown by party of who is saying Obama is the worst, it falls strongly along party lines, with a little bit of help from independents: 63 percent of Republicans chose Obama, while 54 percent of Democrats said George W. Bush. Independents voted "for" both: 23 percent said George W. Bush was the worst, while 36 percent chose Obama. On a similar question directly comparing Bush and Obama, the expected partisan divide is even stronger:

President Barack Obama is the worst president since World War II, and the United States would have been better off if his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, had won the election in 2012, a new Quinnipiac University national poll released today reveals.

The best president? Ronald Reagan.

"Over the span of 69 years of American history and 12 presidencies, President Barack Obama finds himself with President George W. Bush at the bottom of the popularity barrel," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

Ronald Reagan Rated as Best President of Modern Era, Obama Worst

Ronald Reagan Rated as Best President of Modern Era, Obama Worst2

In a Quinnipiac University poll released today, Americans rated Ronald Reagan as the best US President since World War II, while the current White House occupant, Barack Obama, was listed as the worst. The same revealed that for the first time since his term began, Americans consider former President George W Bush to have done a better job than President Obama.

The poll also provided Obama with some of the worst approval ratings of his presidency, and an overwhelming number of Americans believe the nation would be better off had Mitt Romney won the election of 2012. Only 40 percent of those surveyed approve of the job he is doing, with 53 percent disapproving. 45 percent of Americans and 47 percent of independents believe the country would be better off with had the former Massachusetts Governor prevailed in 2012, while 38 percent (33 percent of independents) believe the nation is better off due to Obama's stewardship. Even more troubling for the Administration, 19 percent of Democrats believe things would be the same or better with Romney in office.

Ronald Reagan Quinnipiac University poll July 2, 2014

The survey reflected a growing admiration for Ronald Reagan among all groups. A similar poll conducted by Quinnipiac in 2006 also listed Reagan as the best post World War II President, as 28 percent listed his as most successful against 25 percent for Bill Clinton. Today's numbers show that 35 percent of Americans cited Ronald Reagan, while Clinton dropped to 18 percent, three points higher than John F Kennedy. Reagan's popularity is growing among younger Americans as well, as 18 percent of those aged 18-29 listed the Gipper as greatest.

Ronald Reagan Quinnipiac University poll July 2, 2014

The results are not only a reflection of former President Reagan's leadership skills, but justification of his conservative policies. Both he and current President Barack Obama inherited a nation facing similar circumstances of an ailing economy, an erosion of confidence in American leadership both internationally and domestically. The two men took a very different approach to these problems, as Reagan set about on a course to lessen the influence of federal government disruption in the commerce and daily lives of Americans, while Obama sought to increase the bureaucratic reach of the state in hopes of fundamentally transforming American society and reducing the income gap between the haves and have-nots. Six years into the tenure of his presidency, Barack Obama's policies have yet to produce their desired results as the economy continues to perform in a sluggish malaise, while following a rough start, at this point Reagan's economy was already producing the boom that would result in the single greatest period of growth in the nation's history.

Ronald Reagan was also successful in re-establishing American prestige and hegemony abroad as his "peace through strength" approach to the long-running Cold War with the Soviet Union pushed the Communist juggernaut to the brink of extinction and the regime collapsed shortly after he left office. In contrast, Obama has pursued a policy of "cordiality" and appeasement, which many Americans fear has left the nation weakened and placed us in a reactive state, with foreign aggressors such as Vladimir Putin leading a revitalized Russia to expand its borders and influence at the expense of smaller countries. The world finds itself in a precarious position due to the lack of a strong American voice, with China flexing its muscles against its weaker neighbors and a tyrannical Marxist regime in Venezuela violating the human rights of its citizens with impunity as America has remained largely silent.

These concerns are reflected in the same poll showing President Barack Obama as the worst post-World War II leader. An overwhelming number of Republicans and independents list the current White House occupant as the least effective, while Democrats have remained fairly loyal. By a margin of 33 to 28 percent, he overtook George W Bush for this dubious distinction. Democrats aside, he rates poorly among all various demographic groups, although younger voters list him as slightly preferable to Bush the second.

Ronald Reagan Quinnipiac University poll July 2, 2014

Their historical relevance aside, the numbers do not bode well for President Obama heading into the final election campaign of his political career. As polls indicate a potential Republican Party landslide across the country, Obama must overcome a slew of political scandals involving the Democratic Party on national, state and local levels. A sluggish economy and increasingly dangerous international situation will make it difficult for his party to capture the needed seats to gain the majority in the House of Representatives and the likelihood of a Republican takeover of the Senate grows with each day. These factors will make it nearly impossible for him to achieve many legislative victories in the final two years of his presidency.

Although it garners little attention from the media, a potentially more troubling aspect of November for Obama and Democrats are the statehouse races, in which Republicans are poised to make historic gains. According to recent polling, the GOP is in a position to claim full legislative control of no less than 33 states. By invoking provisions of Article V of the US Constitution, Republicans may be able to call a Constitutional Convention to address such issues as abortion, welfare, immigration and election integrity. This would not only render Obama and Democrats in DC impotent in terms of their legislative agenda, but could potentially inflict wounds that would cripple liberal-Progressives for decades to come.

As Democrats recall the optimism and excitement of liberals and Progressives on election night of 2008, today's report should serve as a sobering reminder that political power and direction in America is fluid. The American voters are far less ideological than they are results-orientated. For a Democratic Party that relies more on rhetoric and a leadership style that is centered on the "constant campaign" they seemed to forget this lesson. Rather than focus on workable solutions to the problems of everyday Americans and an increasingly dangerous world, they have (and continue to) relied on a blame-game strategy of demonizing conservatives and Republicans as the source of all that is wrong in the country and world. This strategy at best makes Democrats appear impotent and at worst incompetent. For conservatives, today's Quinnipiac University poll showing Ronald Reagan as the best President of the modern era and Barack Obama as worst, the values of limited government at home and strong American leadership abroad have been vindicated.

The Fed should get some credit...as should the FDIC...but Bush muscled TARP through, hosted the G20 to set a coordinated international response and most importantly...he was out there every day.   He didn't hide in the Oval office...he didn't point fingers or throw a fit...he lead.  He assured the world markets that the US government was ready to do what was needed to hold the center together

I do agree with you there. I think it's very important for the President to be willing to lead and work with both sides and not just finger point and divide the country.

Did you hear the story about Cantor bringing Obama a proposal right after he came into office? Obama had told Congress that he wanted both sides to bring him ideas so they could all work together. Apparently Obama tore up the proposal right in front of him and said "Elections have consequences!", which is said to have set the tone for the last 5+ years.

In past columns, I've mentioned some teachers and professors that I've known who bluntly said that Ronald Reagan was the nation's worst president. It has become rather common in academia to describe the Reagan years as being filled with greed, and later, with deception in the Iran-Contra matter. Ronald Reagan's "trickle down" economic policies are dismissed in many classrooms as the very "voodoo economics" they were so termed by his onetime opponent and later vice president, George H.W. Bush.

And Reagan's visible decline as a result of Alzheimer's in his later years is often implied to be a fit description of his entire presidency. This assessment has given millions of young students an image of a half-wit, onetime movie star who somehow managed to fool voters into believing that he was instead a man of intelligence and action.

But a recent Quinnipiac poll of registered voters nationwide, asking them to rate "the best" and "the worst" presidents since World War II, reveals something interesting: Many of those young people who were taught history in the past few decades, and who have since become voters, don't agree with the opinion of many of their former teachers, nor with the often cleverly slanted accounts of the Reagan years they read in their history books.

When asked which president since World War II they considered "the worst," voters in the age group of 18-29 and 30-44, the two youngest categories in the survey, said George W. Bush. President Barack Obama came in second for this dubious distinction. When all age groups were included in the results, Obama was rated the overall worst. The poll has a margin of error of less than 3 percent.

The stunningly high percentage of younger voters who have abandoned Obama, both in rankings like the one cited here, and in recent job performance surveys, is a topic for another time. Keep in mind, too, that many younger respondents to surveys like this one tend to more thoroughly judge the presidents who served more recently and who thus were more a part of the respondents' daily lives. So the harsh judgments of both Obama and Bush should be taken with that in mind.

But what about the often vilified Ronald Reagan? It appears that all of those classroom lectures and unflattering portrayals of Reagan in school textbooks had a negligible impact on those they were meant to persuade. Among the two youngest segments of respondents to the poll, Reagan as the "worst" president rated an almost statistically irrelevant 4 percent. And much to the chagrin of many in academia and the media, Reagan topped the overall survey as the nation's "best" president in the modern era.

The youngest respondents in the survey, aged 18-29, rated Reagan third "best," which put him in a virtual statistical tie with John F. Kennedy and Bill Clinton, the two presidents who tied for "best" among this demographic.

Consider a college-aged student of 10 years ago, who in the classroom was subjected to the same unflattering reviews of the Reagan presidency. That person could be at least 30 years old today, placing them in the age group 30-44 in the poll's demographic breakdown. For that age group, Reagan was tops with 36 percent. Clinton was a distant second place as their choice for "best president." Unsurprisingly, Reagan topped the list with older respondents as well.

To be certain, time has a way of healing wounds and allowing myths to become reality with the public. Reagan had his shortcomings, as do all leaders. But some of those shortcomings, such as the Iran-Contra scandal, have saturated our media and history books in a way that seems unbalanced when compared to how scandals such as the IRS targeting of conservative groups and the Benghazi cover-up are covered today.

Fortunately, students in the end are encouraged to make their own choices. And it is pretty clear they have decided to ignore many of their teachers when it comes to the Reagan legacy.
