Bare knuckle boxing - Vice documentary
« on: July 09, 2014, 11:53:04 AM »
I can't imagine why you'd want to do something like this.  ???

The first UK vs US bare knuckle fight, among other things.

How is it possible that Darren Avey didn't post this video?

Didn't watch, but I will if somebody tells me that the corkscrew uppercut is featured.

We're approaching the point where we start seeing "Running Man" types of sports and game shows... fought to the death.  Probably 15-20 years away.  The craving for more and more brutality, blood and gore is never satisfied.  Look how much interest UFC is starting to lose.

I enjoyed that, it need more trash talking, like in the Irish family fights -

.

On the bare knuckle front, I'm fine with it, if the boxers are agreeable. While a bloodier fight sometimes, there is probably less long term damage done compared to gloved bouts. The invention of gloves was mainly to protect the hands, and in a round about way, increase paydays for promoters.

Attended numerous bare fists fights  ;), A$ 5000 is entry fee  ;)
It's call warehouse fights, wealthy people like watching those fights.

bare-knuckle sucks.

risk of a broken bone in your hand is very, very real.. as is a broken or sprained wrist.

I'd done it before, but i'll never do it again w/o the money being worthwhile... I was always much, much tighter and controlled with my strikes than any of those guys.. just swinging wildly is a surefire way to break your hand or wrist. the damage to your face isn't even that bad, usually, as the majority of the strikes land on your skull (which sound like firecrackers in your ears w/o gloves).

the risk of a knockout is fairly low as well.. and usually only happens when you get tagged 'on the button' with a knuckle on your chin or behind the ear or rear of your jaw, which are all much, much harder to hit w/o gloves (which is why compact, boxing or karate-type strikes are more effective than the long, looping muay thai stuff.. muay thai punches, anyways.. not counting elbows)

Define worthwhile.

enough to make me ok with not training upper body for 6-8wks while my hand or wrist(s) heal.

hard to grip a dumbbell with a broken hand.. same with pulling on a bar.. or pushing on a bar.

i think the Yankee Boy will be good once he learns some Basic boxing skills...such as what an upper cut is, which he got ;D. Just hammering away like he did was effective up to a Point but it´s what lands square on the chin which Counts. There was skill in the Irish mans punches and power.

The first few UFC fights were bare knuckle until guys started to break their hands like crazy and went to those padded half gloves.

without coming across like esf

you can avoid a lot of injuries in a sreetfight

by fighting smart

example your knees can inflict massive damage with relatively low risk of injury

Have a good friend who did it for years, his outer 2 knuckles were by his wrist bone, lived with a lot of constant pain and has just had a hip replacement in his early 40s.
Not exactly a glamorous lifestlyle.
