What's stopping you mate.

Medicine is hard to get into, i.e. the aptitude exam is tough going and the selection process in brutal, but once you get in, I hear its more the sheer magnitude of work

That's the problem for me. I'm allergic to hard work.
I left education after college because I found revision and long essays at that level tedious enough, I can't imagine doing a proper intensive course and being able to remain mentally sane.

I heard that suicide and alcoholism among medical students is the highest for all subjects 

Luckily I am going into this with a wife/2 kids/nice house etc so it's not like my grades will define me, like some of these poor guys who hang themselves when they fail an exam
