Anyone Been to Mexico City Lately?

I have a personal reason to go there in a few months, but security is a bit of a concern to me.

I'll be staying in a safe area (I was told) where many government officials and diplomats stay, but I'm wondering in general if the journey from the airport and hanging out in town/touristy areas is ok? I stick out like a sore thumb in places like that and a blonde scandi with me won't help things, many people think I'm American when abroad which sometimes worries me as foreigners hate your guts.

Has anyone been anytime lately? any advice?

Never just the two of you, as it would make you vulnerable.

Security is very beefy in places that high rollers stay, be prepared to see a lot of guns. Other than that, have fun/ common sense, dont go on adventures.

Incredibly unsafe. The tourist resorts are relatively okay if you stay there and don't wander into the towns. Mexico city you will get mugged or kidnapped if you are an American. You have a huge target on your back and everyone will know you are a gringo from the US. The Marines in California are banned from going to Mexico. The Police are so corrupt they will arrest an American on a made up charge and release you with a lot of cash. It's kidnapping by the Police never mind the vicious gangs and organized crime there.

I refuse to go. My girlfriend has a lot of family there and she is always trying to get me to go. I will never step foot on Mexican soil. Way too much risk involved with little to no protection. Unless you absolutely must, I say never venture south of the border.

THIS.  I can carry a gun in the USA.  I can ask for a lawyer and a police supervisor in the USA.  I can expect any LEO to speak my language.  I can sue the shit out of any law officer that abuses me.
