the guy who inspired brando in the movie was really crippled from the war. arthur juraldo, he was in great shape esp considering the year 1950 and he was crippled for real.

That's what people looked like before shit food, car travel and sitting in an office emerged.

I remember a pic, might have been in a Bill Bryson book, of a guy water skiing, he was ripped with a fair amount of muscle - regular 50s guy. Stories of 1920s boxers make them sound like freaks. Throwing 500lb hay bales like they were nothing.
