Inquiry about gym equipment
« on: July 21, 2014, 04:54:35 AM »
I am looking at opening up my own private gym facility (personal training exclusively, for now).

So it's a small gym so to speak. I have not looked at or seen any decent equipment since I left US. I know we have a lot of gym owners as well as Coach, Hazbin and Basile who's expertise I value.

Any suggestions? What are the smart choices?

I HATE everything I have seen so far in Romania: local brands, Panatta, techno gym etc .. all insult any bodybuilding/engineering mind/body intelligence

If it weren't for the distance, I would say that some of Vince's customized stuff looks great and probably feels great too. I am also a student of how to build equipment according to the human body mechanics ..

I was a fan of Hammer Strength and Flex, Icarian equipment, but this was in the late nineties, early 2000's

How big is the place and how much money you are planning to spend?
If you're short on money what kind of advice you wanna hear?
Importing big and heavy equipment obviously do cost some extra funds.
Stick to the local manufacturers, all in all it's just metal.

I can't figure out what's wrong with Panatta, HS, Icarian or Flex ???
Every brand/line has good/average/poor machines, so I would never buy a whole line myself.
Focus on free weights, benches, racks and a good floor. That should be the foundation of a good gym.

Symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder
In order for a person to be diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) they must meet five or more of the following  symptoms:

Has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)
Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
Believes that he or she is “special” and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)
Requires excessive admiration
Has a very strong sense of entitlement, e.g., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations
Is exploitative of others, e.g., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends
Lacks empathy, e.g., is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others
Is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her
Regularly shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes

I'm kind of lucky that I train on old lines of Panatta & Technogym. When it comes to machines, I strongly believe in simplicity. Hammer is a great example of this, but pretty expensive in Europe (import rates of steel). Buying only (?) machines becomes challenging with 20k, since an average commercial grade machine is 3000-5000 EUR, so that's 5-7 machines.

good point but in Romania the gyms have dismal stuff.. I need to handpick pieces of equipment. I am very perticular about the machines or the equipment I want to have in the gym. I will do that with dumbells/dumbell rack and simple stuff tou cannot go wrong with for sure

Then I would suggest that you buy a nineties line of Technogym. I haven't heard any complains from other members in my gym (pictured below), their shitty leg press machine excluded. The owner told me that getting spare parts isn't a problem.

yeah Hammer are great and simplicity as you wrote is important. you have to think of future maintenance too.

Great looking gym. Kind of what I am shooting for. Except with rubber as floor. Cathy Le Francoise had a kick ass personal gym

A good personal trainer with a limited budget and a knowledge of what works both commercially and for results would not ask this question.

He would buy racks, dip attachments, benches, free weights and some adjustable pulleys, and then add from there as his business developed.

Nor would he go on the internet and brag about megadosing a beginner.

You should open a calisthenics gym, with only one scaffolding pole that extends across the whole gym, mirrors on every wall/ceiling/floor and free iphone provided for members to take videos of eachother doing 'pull ups'
