Airline prohibits free speech regarding complaints
« on: July 24, 2014, 09:10:23 AM »
We already know there are some things you can't say or joke about with airlines, but sounds like a nazi gate agent went the extra length to make sure she wasn't given a negative report.   Personally, not only would I have refused to delete the tweet, I would have stood right there in her face and made another one as well.  Then called my buddy who is a reporter at the Sun Sentinel and feed him the whole scoop.

(In fairness, since the family was sitting together, the kids boarding at the same time shouldn't have been a problem)

http://abcnews.go.com/US/family-booted-off-southwest-airlines-dad-tweeted-rude/story?id=24685645

A Minneapolis man said he and his two children were kicked off a Southwest Airlines flight after the father tweeted about a “rude” gate agent who refused to give his kids priority boarding.

The incident happened on Sunday afternoon when Duff Watson was traveling with his two daughters, ages 9 and 6, from Denver to Minneapolis.

“I have been traveling with Southwest for a few years now, and I’m an A-list member,” Watson told ABC News today. “You can board the plane early."

Watson said his two children have always been able to board the plane with him, but the gate agent he confronted Sunday afternoon wouldn’t budge, he said.

“I am not trying to game the system,” Watson said. “I’m not going to leave my kids alone to board. That doesn’t make sense.”

When the gate agent told Watson she can’t let his children board with him, Watson said he asked the agent: “Is this a new policy?”

Watson said the agent didn’t answer his question directly, but told him: “I am not going to change my mind.”

The gate agent allegedly asked Watson and his two children to step aside and wait until the rest of the A-list members board.

“We waited, which was fine,” Watson said. “I thought she was very rude and wanted to complain to customer service, so I asked her: ‘Can I get your last name?’”

“She told me: ‘You don’t need my last name for anything,’” Watson said. “I told her: ‘Real nice way to treat an A-list member.’”

"I tweeted something like, ‘Wow, rudest agent in Denver. Kimberly S, gate C39, not happy @SWA,’” he said.

Watson then boarded the plane along with his two children. However, they couldn't get home just in time.

Unreal exp. Awaiting resp. from airline. Asked for name of rude gate agent. We board. I tweet. Kids & I pulled off unless I delete. AYKM?

“I heard my name in the broadcast, asking me to get off the plane,” Watson said. “I didn’t know what was going on. I thought we left something or we were on the wrong flight.”

Watson was then approached by a flight attendant, who refused to tell him the reason for the broadcast, but said: “You need to exit the aircraft immediately.”

“So I walked by the people who we just walked by to get to our seats,” Watson said.

Watson then ran into the same gate agent he had tweeted about.

“She [the agent] said I was a safety threat,” Watson said. “I was shocked. There was no use of profanity, there were no threats made. How was I a safety threat?”

Watson said the agent threatened to call the cops if he didn’t delete the tweet that included her first name and initial of last name.

“I was taken aback by the situation. My two kids were crying,” Watson said. “She watched me as I deleted the tweet.”

The gate agent then allegedly summoned Watson and his two children to get back on the same flight.

“So we walked through the same passengers the third time,” Watson said.

“The point is not the order of boarding,” Watson said. “The point is how she responded.”

Southwest Airlines could not be immediately reached for comment by ABC News. But the airline issued a statement to a local CBS affiliate confirming that a customer was removed for a short time and continued on to Minneapolis. The incident is under review, Southwest noted.

The follow-up from the incident on Sun. with @SouthwestAir is now a double insult. Choose a kinder airline. #neveragain Family deplaned?
    — Duff Watson (@DuffWatson) July 22, 2014

“I have been loyal to Southwest,” Watson said. “I was really upset that Southwest has such rude front-line staff members."

A Southwest representative called Watson after the incident, and informed him that A-list members' priority treatment doesn't apply to family members.

"I looked on their website and I didn't find any explicit rule," Watson said.

Southwest has offered Watson a $50 voucher as a good-will gesture, he said, but he plans to donate it to charity.

“I’m not going to fly them again," he said.

“I wish I didn’t back down, I wish I didn’t delete the tweet. But under that quid pro quo situation, I did it,” Watson said.

There is no "free speech" on a private airline.  Only an idiot would become confrontational on a plane in today's environment.  One of the quickest ways to find yourself in handcuffs.

Once you enter the TSA checkpoint, you are pretty much a willing hostage at that point.  You really have no "rights" that most people take for granted.

Lol @ being an "A" lister on Southwest. Oh brother  ::)  Fly Delta or a real airline that actually has perks if you want to complain about status of boarding. Southwest is what it is, the greyhound of the sky. What a fucking  tool.

Damn if that was me and my kids where sitting there crying I think I would have absolutely lost my shit on that lady.

I cant believe they pulled him off the plane for that bullshit. Good for him for putting his kids first and making sure the situation didnt escalate even further.

Flying is going to come with some annoyances that you can't escape.  Some in the form of mechanical/technical issues such as delays, cancellations, cramped room, bad seat mates, etc.. and some are inherent to locations you are traveling from/to such as older (55+) single white males or people with a large amount of professional photography equipment coming from Costa Rica, single American females flying into Russia, etc..

But just flat out rudeness and attitude is not something that you should have to contend with from a twat on a power trip at the gate.

There is no excuse for flight attendants, etc. to be rude or unreasonable, but if you don't like it, take another airline.

People who have these problems often instigate these things because they are upset over not getting their own way.  I fly all the time, including over 30,000 miles so far this year, and I never have a problem.  Even on the rare occasion when they tell me prematurely to get off my electronic devices (which they are getting away from), I just do it.  I'm not going to be one of those idiots being escorted off the plane and making a stupid youtube video about it.

BULLSHIT.

If she was being a douche (and that's a valid point of contention in this case) then she deserves to be called out by name as does the airline she represents.

How was she at risk by having her name exposed?  She is in an airport.  Duh!!!  It isn't like someone is going to bring a gun through security and shoot her.

She was just on a power trip trying to strong arm a person from filing a bad review of her.  It isn't like Southwest subscribed to this man's Twitter feed and followed his every tweet.
