I played a hand once where two guys had 9 9 and went all in against k k pre flop. K k made quads by the flop, guy with 9 9 made straight flush by river. Sickening.

I was playing PokerStars before they got busted for cheating, was in a $1000 buy in tourny.  I had 4 Qs and lost to someone with 4 Ks.  After I learned about Poker Stars cheating it all made sense.

That was real money at stake - not just "tournament funny money" right?

Excuse my ignorance - but the amounts on the table at these tournaments seems to be getting huge...

Everyone chips in $10K at the start.  The total minus the casino's take becomes the prize pool.  Everyone is then given $10K in tourney chips.  So if 3000 people enter the winner at the end will be the last man with 30000000 in their pool.  The big WSOP gets about 6-10K in people so the pool is super high.

The chips at the table are useless though.  You can't take them into the casino and use them.  They only have value at the poker table.

I have the hands saved on an old hard drive, will try find them. The most famous one from WSOP main event was four aces losing to royal flush, guy with royal flush looked like a total redneck. I know some competitions have a good prize for the worst bad beat.

OK - makes sense - these guys were obviously not staking millions - it seems sort of spurious making it look like so much is at stake.

Sort of trying to make it something it really isn't.

Why does everything have to get dumbed down for TV?

So what is the final winner's take?  Do runner ups get anything?   ???

High Stakes Poker had million dollar hands but can't help thing it was staged. That said, there were whales like Guy Labierte (not sure on spelling of surname but he is the Cirque du Soleil billionaire) who would play ridiculously high stakes games live and on Full Tilt, his main advantage being the money meant less to him. Some Texas billionaire also got into a battle with top pros initially taking millions from them before they pooled together (The Organization) to get money off him, mainly using Phil Ivey, to skin him for millions. There is a book about it, has banker and suicide in title I think.

@ Twaddle, winnings have been as high as 12 million dollars for winner, 2nd gets around 60% of that. A guy I went to school with finished 6th in 2012 and got $1.8m, winner got $8.5 million.

Yep, so if they start with 6000 people starting at about 1/2 through the remaining people start getting money from $10K and up.  So you need to survive the first 2 days to get your money back.  I think getting in the top 10 nets you at least a million.

Lol what a moron. Pokerstars was never cheating and were never "busted for cheating". I'm sure you were playing a $1k buyin though. Oh brother

The Org were skinned for days when Ivey took the challenge and then proceeded to milk the billionaire of not only millions, but his desire to play poker. His mathematical analysis was supposed to be unbeatable and he couldnt understand how Ivey was dominating him, as such he decided to retire from poker there & then.

One of the unluckiest hands ive ever seen.......

craziest deal ive ever seen.....

He could have won entry to it from a feeder tournament. I was in a few £450 buy ins by winning feeder tournaments. Won a quiz prize with entry to a £25 buy in feeder, came 2nd or third in that and got free buy in  ;D  Have me winning quiz recorded on sky+ would love to put it on youtube.
