The challenge raises awareness and increases donation potential.

Last year this time about two million was donated with no awareness challenge.

This year over 13 million has been raised.

Everyone I know that took the challenge also donated.

The merits of the challenge kinda speak for themselves.

Thank you.

I wonder if Heath will consider people haters if they do not do this challenge.

Anyone?

The people I know are doing both. The first to raise awareness and the second to help fund the research

What I find interesting is why people needed to be PROMPTED by some challenge to donate, advocate or give back? If it was not for this "ice bucket challenge" 99% of the people who donated would not blink an eye to do something. Its great people are donating, but its also sad that people need to be prompted or asked to give back.

Most people do both.  But there are so many other worthy causes to you can be a part of. Always good to donate to a charitable cause each year.  But yes, this is awesome for ALS!

The ALS Association states that as of August 17, they’ve raised more than $13.3 million nationally, and that the surge in donations is from the “Ice Bucket Challenge” that has swept social media. The surge in donations comes after the “Ice Bucket Challenge” took social media by storm. Once a person is nominated by a friend, people must dump a bucket of ice water over their heads and donate $10 within 24 hours, or donate $100 to the fight against ALS.  Last year, barely 10% of that came in.

You should donate to worthwhile and trusted causes every year.  Between PATT, Diabetes, Autism and others (we donate every year), it does make you feel good, especially if you are connected to them in one way or another.

That's the thing, most people do not! And if you do not have money to donate, you can always volunteer your time. However, people really need to be prompted to do this stuff.

If everyone's accepting the challenge (in lieu of donating), how are they raising funds?

Most of the celebs still donate anyway but the whole ice water thing is what drives the interest.

Perhaps it's just this particular disease. There are so many ailments and related charities, maybe ALS had been forgotten. Doesn't mean folks weren't donating to other causes.
