Beef over bread triggered Macon shooting

A 22-year-old Macon man was shot several times late Wednesday in an argument that a witness said erupted over a 98-cent loaf of bread.

Glenwood Van Lee Lamar was wounded about 11:20 p.m. in the 1000 block of Ash Street, a few blocks southeast of Tattnall Square Park near Calhoun Street.

Lamar was in stable condition at The Medical Center of Central Georgia, a Thursday statement from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said. One of Lamar’s injuries was a gunshot wound to his lower back.

James Jereal Watson, of Alberts Lane, turned himself in at the Bibb Law Enforcement Center and was booked about 1 a.m. Thursday, according to Bibb jail records. Watson, 18, was charged with aggravated assault.

Witnesses said Lamar and others were exchanging words after a dispute about some food -- a loaf of bread, as it turned out -- which triggered the shooting.

A woman who lives in the 1000 block of Ash Street, at a house where Lamar and Watson also stayed, reported hearing five or six shots after she heard Lamar and two other men arguing “over some bread,” an incident report noted.
