Whether the attack was random doesn't have an iota to do with who was attacked first. I could easily argue that they went after the male first because he posed the greatest physical thread.  This happens a lot.   Why attack the female first and leave the male able to defend her?

Zimmerman was 150% wrong and should have been convicted.  He had no reason or right to go and chase someone around for no reason.  He killed that boy in cold blood when he fought back.   He'll get his one day.
