Here is a trick question that only a true Bond fan can answer: Which is the best Bond & film?
here is a clue: the best Bond does not appear in the best Bond film.
For me, it is Connery. The first is still the best although I have very much enjoyed Daniel Craig's performance as 007. Now then, I must also confess that the first Bond film I ever viewed is, to me, the best. Goldfinger. Why? I was so impressed by this film, the theme song, the gadgetry and the story that it is what Bond is all about. Like songs and covers of songs, it is often the first version you hear that defines which is your favorite take. Example, "Twist and Shout". The first time I heard it, it was the Beatles version. That is the one I prefer over the Isley Brothers version. Ben E. Kings "Stand By Me" stands out from Lennon's version. It is what it is and what it is, is personal.
I may well be one of the few that enjoyed "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and "You Only Live Twice" is a close second to "Goldfinger" for personal reasons not the least of which is Nancy Sinatra's beautiful theme song. Again, for personal and highly subjective reasons.
It could be said that the film that started it all, "Dr. No" is usurped by the film that restarted it all "Casino Royale," but to me it is "Skyfall" that truly brings Bond back into focus and Craig's excellent portrayal of 007 is second to none in this film as is the story line and the way they pay homage to and merge the old and the new.
Perhaps this latest Bond film could be the one to bind them all back together. I look forward to your take on the best Bond and Bond film. Thanks!
