Tipping is a vital part of the mechanics of our economy. Tipping allows the less wealthy to dine at 'better'  (read: more expensive) restaurants, which helps to keep those places in business. A business would rather have more customers and having more businesses to patronize is generally great for the consumers, so it's to our benefit to have a portion of the workers' wages paid directly by the consumers.

So let me get this right.

By having consumers pay a portion of the workers wages, it allows the restaurant to lower prices, making the place more accessible to less wealthy people who then have to fork out the same amount of money anyway because of the tip.

Gotcha.
