Chimps are natural-born killers, say scientists

Paris (AFP) - Chimpanzees can be lethally violent to each other but this stems from an inherent streak and not, as some have suggested, from human interference, a study said on Wednesday.

Zoologists, led by the famed Jane Goodall, have speculated for years on the causes of "chimpanzee wars" among Man's genetically-closest relatives.

One theory is that the apes are made more aggressive as a result of human influence: loss of habitat or food creates ever-greater competition for resources.

But new research, published in the journal Nature, said coordinated violence by Pan troglodytes is an evolutionary strategy.

Chimps kill to wipe out rivals, thus gaining territory, mates, water or food, it suggests. In Darwinian terms, they seek an advantage to help them survive and hand on their genes to future generations.

The evidence comes from an examination of five decades of research into 18 closely-studied chimpanzee communities in African forests.

The researchers pored over 152 killings by chimps, most of which were carried out by males acting together.

The groups would often band together to carry out murderous raids on another community, typically killing rival males and infants who were not genetically related.

They sometimes snatched babies from nursing mothers to slaughter them but spared the females.

The investigators had to determine whether these acts were driven by hunger, human disturbance or deforestation and whether the protected area the chimps inhabited was large or small.

Most of the killings occurred in east African communities that were least affected by human interference of any kind.

"Wild chimpanzee communities are often divided into two broad categories depending on whether they exist in pristine or human-disturbed environments," said David Morgan, a specialist in ape conservation at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, Illinois, who has studied chimps in central Africa for 14 years.

"Study sites included in this investigation spanned the spectrum. We found human impact did not predict the rate of killing among communities."

Truth. I've often opined that humans are REALLY only good at two things: killing and fucking. And that the modern "alpha" man still has it within his DNA to do both. My wife doesn't like to hear me say it, but real men have a plan to kill every man that they meet and a plan to (optionally) fuck every woman they meet.

Understanding, harnessing and channeling those biological imperatives instead of artificially repressing them is important.

Exactly, AJ. Spot on. Two doctors have diagnosed me as a sociopath for relaying that PRECISE sentiment to them. I learned in time that it's better to craft your mask and wear it well than speak the truth that so many hide from; that as a society we have been bred and raised and nurtured and praised to hide from. That we are not special. We are not unique. We come from somewhere just as the dogs we love do and the reason the adage that a dog is man's best friend is because it is simply not in our genetic code to kill dogs if we have an abundance of food. I don't like to even get that deep, considering that I have dogs and I live alone with them and they're subjected to one of the two phenomenons that we hide from and we craft our masks to evade anyone from embarressment in the event we speak truthfully; they see different women come and go almost nightly and they go in their crate then come sleep in the bed that I fucked the women in the night after they leave.

As for the other phenomenon, I do believe society has become emasculated and we as a species have strayed.

I say strayed because of all the fat emasculated looking short men I see, who I look into their eyes and they know that I know that THEY know we are different at heart. At soul. And in body.

And I say perhaps we are right where we need to be in the Vain of Taoism; ergo, for there to be Me, and You, and any sort of "Alpha" male there needs to be our opposite. These obese, pathetic, sub 6 foot, down syrdom faced, balding, sub 70 IQd troglodyte descendants-direct.

Now not every one of the elements I mentioned above's antonym is mutually inclusive with being an "alpha male" (in other words, you could certainly be under 6 foot, or bald, and still be capable of killing). However, I will say this: if you are, you are an outlier.

Because one common thing that I have noticed in the genetic advancement of man is that when I was deemed a sociopath by doctors, I realized that was an honor; and I can see it when I meet another. And we usually enjoy each others company. Because that is a microcosm of what would happen in the event that there was no more rule of law and we all had to fend for ourselves. And this is two fold

We would either band together. Or stay apart. Perhaps the microcosm is the adage of keeping your friends close but enemies (those who potentially could kill you) closer.

One thing I know, is I KNOW when I see them. And it doesn't even happen daily. And I do not have many male friends in real life. I don't go out to bars much with males anymore. I fuck a lot of women. But I have some old, close friends. And they are also deemed by doctors as sociopaths. And they also are deemed by women as 100% matches; 100% desirable. And they are also very, very successful in their professional lives. We are all 28 years old. I really only have 2 friends in real life. And I'm not ashamed at all to say that.

When I go out, I tend to go out with my twin. And some of you may find this totally fucked, but it's the best way of bringing girls (plural) home.

Perhaps I did. But my point is I am not a serial killer. I am not a sociopath. I am an HONEST individual. I work in a very dishonest professional purview. And I view the world in a very different way and it is not due to confirmation bias/ "nurture". My dad is the same way. My mother is even brutal.

So there's my theory.

To end this, I find it funny that this thread and the JFK thread (my two favorite getbig threads of the year) have come up the day before olympia and are about something so much more personal; something I haven't seen discussed on getbig ever in fact.
