No, the trophy is bronze, maybe they give it a gold wash, but they will never make the trophy out of Gold. It might be a joke or rumor based on the trophy that Sandow himself gave out during his own contest during the early 20th century,  that one was solid gold for first place, silver for second, and bronze for 3rd. During that time gold was around $18-19 dollars an oz.
