ok so this wall power outlet has four wires coming out of it, i can tell a single wire apart, i have no way of knowing they are all black with insulation. i took the outlet out because it wasnt working

i just bought a multimeter today but the instructions really suck it wasnt expensive though just not sure how to use the damn thing

i got all the power shut off in this house so im not working on live wires like a moron

on the back of the outlet there are no identification markers as to where the wires should be hooked into the screws on the outlet ( i realize that the older outlets have no identification markers for where the wires should go)

i just dont know how the hell to identify each wire, and the the other two outlets have 4 wires in them each (they are both outlets like this

thanks for the help

ive been reading alot latley studying the MIT courses in the electricity and magnetism very good stuff a shitload of equations on coulombs section of electricity now, havent read any eric dollards stuff latley just checking out what standard science is saying im on lecture 3 its rather fascinating when you have one charge thats negative and one charge thats positive they attract , and two positive charges will repell (this is true electrostatics meaning action at a distance)

lets say billy falcon is negative charged and wilson f is also negative charge they will repell via the electric field lines of force now the fascinating part is there is much debate on what these lines of force consist of that are moving billy and wilson away from each other, many claim its photons, no real consice answer

if you want to know what i know (but dont even yet know how to identify the wires or use a multimeter yet  ;D) check these videos hope you will find them interesting

this is like free education of the highest order, god like knowledge for free

i feel one can live a life of a king and not waste time with manual labor but in order to get there one must master the electricity first

you're never gonna know if it's working with no power getting to it. turn the power back on and then give it a try

the MIT vids above are great, there is so much to learn, im gonna have to relearn some algebra aswell nothing too strenous. i need to learn the epsilon equation too so many equations its not that difficult i like to know why and how they came up with the coulomb and the epsilon and phi, alpha, delta ect

There are four wires because this outlet in has power coming in to it and going out of it to another outlet. Newer wiring would also have a ground wire which would be sheathed in green or just bare copper. Unfortunately, it appears from the photo you posted that the insulation is discolored with age which makes it harder to tell which is the neutral/white wire and which is the hot wire/black visually, so you need to use a tester.

Turn the power back on. Test with the voltage tester. A noncontact voltage tester is easy and safe to use as you don't have to actually touch the wire. Turn on the tester and bring the tip close to the exposed end of each wire. The hot one will give a visual and audible alert. Most likely the neutral wire is white and the hot wire is red or black, but test to make sure.

Buy a new outlet. the hot/black wires should be attached to the brass colored screws and the neutral wires to the silver colored ones. Since there probably is no ground wire, you can ignore the green screw.

You're welcome. Basic electrical wiring is pretty straight forward when you follow the directions. Make sure all your connections are good and tight. Loose connections are a common cause of electrical fires. Old outlets often develop slop in the receptacle making for a poor connection or none, (like putting a small penis in a stretched out vagina)  ;D. This is why it is a good idea to replace them when they become troublesome.

When it comes to plumbing, I run the other way. Unlike electrical wiring, plumbing is never as it seems (at least when I do it). I think I have everything connected right and then it leaks.

i masterd plumbing on my first try i had to ask around here how to properly ground it since all these old houses ground to the water line from the shower (that never felt right so instead i drove the ground wire into the ground with a rod). plumbing was a sinch did the whole house top to bottom took some time though

ill be doing more electrical im taking on bigger projects hiring people on occasion to do some of the simple minded labor, while i do the details and learning as i go along about the electrical side of things

Hope you had it located 1st(all utilities marked) it's free. Pounding a ground rod w/o knowing what's underneath you is a bad idea you hit power see ya, you hit any other utility your looking at a couple grand for that company to fix it and your home insurance won't pay w/o a locate #.

Fuck.  If that meddling kid Prime hadn't been snooping around I would have gotten away with falcon owing me a favor.  :(

Yeah, I was gonna guess no ground wire.  I think they wire outlets in series (as opposed to in parallel).  That means if one shits out then all the ones after it in the series also don't work, so the problem you're chasing could be further upstream than the non-functioning outlet you've got there.  Or maybe downstream.  If one fails anywhere maybe the whole circut is kaput.  I think.

They call 'em active & neutral here, active being brown & neutral being blue.  I think.  Perhaps there will be some notation on the can that indicates which is which.  These are 1/3 of the 3 phase power transmission of Nikola Tesla fame.  In your 110v country they'll use 2 of the 3 phases on big draw items like hardwired stoves, so it goes A to A rather than A to N which gives 220v.  Or something like that.  I think.  Idk, wear rubber gloves.

I totally fixed a honda gx motor the other day.  Tuned my 2 stroke weedeater last night.  Bought an old ass diesel at auction for pennies to take apart and see what's what with those.  I'm proud to follow in the gigantic footsteps of Champion Falcon.

Now if you'll excuse me I have to somehow extract a Lincoln Ranger 405D welder/generator (1&3 phase!) from my van without getting trapped under it.  If I'm not back soon send help.
