Lifting a million pounds in one day
« on: February 14, 2006, 11:39:36 AM »
A 45-year old man in my gym is on a quest today to lift a milliion pounds in one day.

He has 12 hours.  The gym staff is following him around with clipboards and calculators.   When I left, he had lifted 728,000 pounds, with 4 hours remaining.  He's jumping from machine to the DB rack, doing a few sets on each and hitting his full body.

He's also sporting knee wraps, elbow wraps, belt, gloves, chalk, gallon water bottle and he does look pretty beat.

How do thay measure what counts as lifted?  Couldnt he just load up loads on a shrug machine and rep out thousands of tiny partials with a big weight?

He's doing full range reps.  He was doing leg extensions, calf raises, back extensions, leg press, when I was there.  Seemed like he was sticking with 100 pounds on the machines (for ease of adding up).  He had like 3 plates per side on the leg press.

No record books or anything... but there was a decent crowd watching towards the end.  Should be an event by the time he hits a million.  He looked pretty worn out at 728,000 pounds.

If ya think about it... it's something like 10 reps @ 100 pounds, for 1000 sets.  Or 500 tons.

the ROM between calve raises and leg presses is quite different

true.  But one can't do 1000 sets of calf raises with 100 pounds.  At some point, lactic acid would do it's thing

I'm sure some of it was to relieve boredom. Just doing one exercise will get boring quickly, but if you do many, your mind is relieved of that boredom and it seems to go by quicker.

it would be more impressive if the guy was moving a million lbs of sand or stone.  Thats measurable.
What this guy was doing sounds really stupid ;D

Definitely more of an endurance thing than a strength thing.  It'll be interesting tomorrow to see the big gym sign to see if he made it.

the guy works at taco bell also.  He competed in the PLing competition last month and squatted 550 in competition I think.   Just looks like your average bulky guy... I sure wouldn't wanna scrap with him tho.

There was a guy at Gold's Venice who did that every year for his birthday. I forget his name. He was a writer for Musclemag, Iron Man, etc. Nice guy, but weird. I think it took him 13-15 hours to reach 1 million pounds.

Did he hit the whole body?

If I was going to do it, I'd have to make it a rule that I had to hit every machine in the gym at least once.

Actually I used my workouts by how much weight I moved. For example instead of doing 15 sets for quads I'd do as many sets as it took to move 35,000 pounds. It was interesting & a nice change for a little while. However, it got really old after about four months (I got tired of adding everything up).
