Cool. Love the mountain bike stuff. Have a nice Gary Fisher, and none of that disc brake shit, neither. Last time I hit the trail I hit a tree, he said woodenly.  ::)

bikes have changed a lot since you bought that Gary Fisher as you prolly know if your into it.

alloy hydroforming cuts down on weight of alloy frames as do carbon parts like seat posts handle bars rims. carbon fibre frames. disk brakes of varying size depending on disciplene, adjustable multi setting suspensions and split pivot type suspension set ups where the rear of the bike is connected by pivot points that attach it to the rest of the frame so the shock can freely absorb everything. basically the rear end and front end absorb impact independently. 3 different rim sizes to choose from now 26/27.6/29

Super sharp looking bike. Can't do the disc brakes. Just can't. Get that slight port pull. Probably not an issue now that I'm old retired. Maybe take the bars downstairs and take a few inches off? Always loved the narrow horns for trail work. Can't tell you how many times I got docked.

never noticed the pull I'll watch for it next time. disks grab- they'll launch you right over the bars if you grab a handful. esp the shimano stuff. I find the SRAM / elixirs a little spongier. ya wide bars is a huge trend. I think those are 720's. but once you get the hang of them you won't go back. shorten your stem to 50mm ahd you have a nice machine in corners. gotta be careful up here a lot of trails are 20+ years old made in the days of narrow bars/ 26ers so they are narrow and tight- nothing sucks more than flying down track and clipping a bar on a sapling and either fighting the bike before you lose it completely or just go over altogether right from the start.

it's easier to go over right from the start- your getting up off the dirt before you realise what even happened. for some reason the body really soaks those up well compared to the slo mo 'fuck this is going to hurt and there's nothing I can do abt it' ones. :D

I went back to flats after that last crash. I'm just way faster on flats. I think people get brainwashed into using clipless (riding clipped in).

DC's and 45North pedals for me now.

you ride mostly DH? that kona a downhill rig?

It's more of a freeride bike but I use it for everything,  built to take the beating of a 270# guy that does stupid shit. :D

Ah yes, the old stinky. I used to have the 04 one with monster T forks. Those were the days, "hucking" garage rooftops and flatlanding stairs on 3,0" nokian gazzaloddi's. Thing was indestructible.

These are my two beasts...unfortunately as I live in Central London they don't get as much mileage as I'd like, but this weekend I had a good spin on the mountain bike in Richmond park.

I fell off the roadie in the most embarrassing way ever last month, stopping at traffic lights my foot wouldn't unclip and tipped to the side like a plonker grazing my knee in plain view off full traffic.

I was once browsing a bike shop and there was a downhill bike for £4,000 and another for £300, I asked the guy who worked there why the big difference in price and he pointed to the expensive one and said "that ones fast"

I explained to him that bearing in mind it was a bike for going downhill it was likely to be fast.

Shopping trolleys go fast downhill FFS.

You'd be happy if you find a brand new downhill bike for less than £2000-2500.

I dont ride bikes, but ite like comparing a ford pinto to an F1 car.

Theyre purpose built to go down super rough terrain fast, and all the lightweight materials and metals fewuire fancy processes to make, which costs money.

Hell those bikes have.some of the same suspensiom and brake designs you see on race cars.

The cheap one will fet you downhill, but not nearly as fast, efficiently, or comfortably as thr expensive one.

my buddy has that same jamis and beats the shit out of it. its a solid bike.

the last time i was out on my bike we were in soft sand and i was clipped in. of course my tire buries itself when im turning and almost stopped. i topple over helpessly. fuck it hurt too. riding flats ive have literally had to grab my brakes and fly over the bars to avoid hitting a tree and got up with no damage but a little fall being clipped in hurt like a bitch.

i went home and put my flats back on and will never ride clipped in again unless its on a road bike.

Here's my old Downhill bike, cost me a total of €6000+, rode like a total beast. Though, the days of insane downhill riding are over. Switched to road a few years ago since I turned into a pain fearing sissy. The bike had it all though, World cup edition damper/fork, carbon seat/post/handlebar, Sun Ringlé Jumping flea hubs, Diabolus cranks, X0 gear, Saint brakes etc. All top of the line. White parts of peace was the last pic I have of this old beauty.

This thread made me really nostalgic, almost to the point of getting an mtb again and trash some trails.

thts a serious rig made for one purpose.

abt trashing trails- guys reading this will go 'mtb? thats gay' unless you have done you you cant understand why is so goddamn addictive. i rode dirt a lot of years, in fact my mom bought me my first bike when i was a kid, but id never trade dirt riding for MTB.

something about sitting on something that weighs 30 lbs as you fly down a trail w only your reflexes to save you is very addicting. i took my brother out. hes like 'bro, you dont have time to think out here' :D thats why i like it. all the bullshit in your life ceases to exist the minute you get on that bike. there no bills no drama no work theres no time to think of that stuff. its just being in that moment where you gotta take the line, look 3 corners ahead, go faster and try not to hit anything.
