Fuck I actually remember that. Was the nightclub in the town of Arnold not called Stallone's just to add to the confusion. "Arnold, the wild nights at Stallone's" I think there was an article in Muscle and Co. deliberately written to wind Arnold and Sly up. Good strategy to get noticed, I had no idea that Peter was the guy behind it.

Spot on Big Al,Muscle and co was Peters mag and i think that headline was close to when Arnold got married, thats why he was a bit paranoid about that as a headline.

Ok - he is an 70 year old guy following bodybuilding, but what relevance does he have in the sport? Did he ever competed to be a judge,or just a writer? Today, with social media and internet, even the begginers in the sport who doesnt even compete can be a writer for the sport... but this guy slowly started to be ridiculous. I mean I respect opinions from guys who competed in the Olympia like Dennis James (who comments shows) but how can be respected a word from a man who never competed?

Legendary bodybuilding writer for FLEX Magazine. McGough was spawned from the butthole of Dorian Yates.

Peter was and is still one of the more respected figures in the sport of bodybuilding, who ran Flex Magazine for a while out here in Woodland Hills, and know a ton about bodybuilder, bodybuilders and the history.  Correct, he was there before and when the Shadow (Dorian Yates) started, and a few people know this, he was reading Getbig when people were raving about Phil Heath, and gave Phil is first contract with the magazine.  Kudos the Peter!

I seriously find it funny when people, to this today, say how can someone write about people, bodybuilders, the sport when they never competed.  I call it experience in being at various contests, talking to many bodybuilders, learning to write and listening.  Like basketball, football, soccer - you don't need to get the ball in the goal to know if the guy is good, has a great physique and can do well.

Peter is one the best bodybuilding journalist's around and has been for many years.

during ronnies first few years as an obscure pro,   peter singled him out as having something different - a 'pop' to his muscle and crispness that no other pro had.

definitely has an eye for the sport.

McGough had a bodybuilding newspaper in the UK after Muscle & Co and prior to joining Weider.  I remember it as one of the best publications on the "sport" that I ever read.   His journalistic standards back then were so far ahead of the more mainstream mags.

He started writing for Bodybuilding Monthly back when it rocked and even managed to make local EFBB qualifiers sound exciting and full of dramatic passion and intrigue.  I vividly remember a story of him travelling with Linkie Wilson to some Nottingham qualifier from way back in the late 1980s.

No other bodybuilding writer I've read ever left the same impression apart from Rick Wayne.  Sadly I thought he went off the boil at Weider and it's been a long time since I could bring myself to look at a bodybuilding magazine.

I bet we have seen each other around the shows back in the 80s and 90s.
So much of the stuff you write strikes a cord.

Were you watching for lanky spotty kids gazing lovestruck at the shoulder width of dudes like Ian Harrison?

If so, you might have spotted me for sure.

St Georges Hall, Harrogate Conference Centre, Camden Town Hall, that place where they used to hold the Stars, Wembley...

Do you recall a guy called Mick Hill from Yorkshire? Out of Phoenix and Paula's first gym.

He was fucking terrible.  I think he was around the time / just after Rick Wayne and he tried way too hard.  Took a thesaurus and regurgitated it.

The paper was called pumping Press,it was a great read.I trained with Linkie in the late 80s and worked for him all through the 90s,i think the story you might be talking about was a trip Peter took with Linkie , Jimmy Tobin and Trev mulvany(RIP) to a qualifier and Peter said a guy posed to music by the group BIg Country and Jimmy said "more like one syllable of the second word".

Peter is one of the good guys. You don't have any guarantees of tenure working for muscle magazines.

Peter also has a good sense of humour.

He thinks you're a fag.

Fucking hell, yes that was it. In Bodybuilding Monthly so long ago.  I remember Trev's name.

Ian Hill was the first competitive bodybuilder I ever saw naked (no homo).  I wondered what had happened to his balls.

Great physique - saw him at Phoenix in Bradford and then maybe also at Altered Images in Pudsey a few years later.  I used to love AI and chats with Ken the owner.
