Life’s a Beach: ‘Bad Luck Obama’ Sees Childhood Home of Hawaii Reject Proposal To Honor Him

Honolulu, Hawaii, city officials have ended a plan to rename a beach after President Obama, who was born and grew up there. Two Honolulu City Council members proposed renaming Sandy Beach Park after President Obama; however, residents strongly came out against the proposal. From the AP: The beach is a popular [sic] for bodysurfing on Oahu’s east side. It was a favorite for the president as he grew up. He bodysurfed there while on vacation during his 2008 campaign.
Martin says in a statement that he heard historic and cultural sensitivity concerns from the community about the name change.
He says there may be other public facilities more appropriate to honor the president.
“It’s not that the president isn’t worthy of some degree of recognition, but perhaps we should look at other areas besides Sandy Beach,” Honolulu Council Chairman Ernie Martin, who proposed the change, told KHON-TV. This isn’t the first time the president was turned down for an honorary naming. Last month, the City of Chicago dropped plans to name a high school after President Obama. Comedian Jimmy Fallon gave a comedic reason for the decision:
