Slavery is a part of history. It's when ideologues use slavery to manipulate people there is a problem.

Isn't that the point of constantly talking about racism and slavery.  Anytime you want to make an observation about particular problems the issues of slavery and racism will rear their heads.  We have conditioned people to be paralyzed by even the mention of these topics.  Paralyzed people don't speak up.

With that logic, we may as throw away all history. Why do we teach kids about world war 1 and 2? Why do we teach kids about the civil war and the boston tea party?

How I would teach  about slavery is by first looking at the entire global history of slavery as an institution.  This way you dispel the prevailing feeling by blacks that they are the only victims of slavery and that whites are its only perpetrators.  Secondly I would look at slavery from a economic perspective.  Who benefited slavery and how much.  What a lot of people don't understand is that slavery and empire building doesn't enrich the average person and it never has.  In fact, for the average person slavery was competition and harmed them financially. This would dispel the idea that all or most of a population or culture benefited from the slavery and therefore are culpable.  The problem is that teaching about slavery in this manner takes away its power as a tool of social control.
