Those kids right there gave you the fucking right reasons. USA is the biggest stake-holder when it comes to disturbing world peace.
Kids got the bigger picture right here.

PS ISIS does suck.

The question is flawed.  Of course the largest superpower in the world would have the easiest potential to cause the most damage.

The question should have been "do you sympathize with anything ISIS is doing" or something along those lines.  That would have let us know where the kids stand.

The question is fine, it is the OP who is flawed in not realising that there isn't really a story here worthy of discussion.

What if the U.S. decided to never get involved with anything outside of its own borders.

Would that change your answer?

If so, then it means no foreign aid and no coming to ask for help when shit hits the fan.

If the U.S. is as you are saying, then we would have to remove completely.

Another question I would ask then, who is a greater potential to increase world security. Isis or the US?

The U.S. will bail your ass out when someone comes bearing down on you. Will ISIS?

Oh RLY?

Yes.

from fighting wars when needed to sending money to disaster areas.

Is the U.S. perfect? No. Of course not.

But around the world people ask for our help. Tsunamis. Earth quakes. All over.

Do I think we should be out fighting wars for oil? Of course not. Thats not what this is about though.

The US only does what is in it's own best interests.  And rightly so.

World peace and stable economies to buy her products is largely the best course of action.

I don't see many people criticising the US in this thread, just being realistic.  I was quite impressed with the students reasoning as well.  You could see the cogs whirring as they answered the question thoughtfully and not with knee jerk reaction the OP was looking for.

I think America is the greatest nation in the modern world (by far) and I still think it sucks at foreign policy. Probably because of it's scale and relative isolation.

You could argue that ISIS only exists in its current state BECAUSE of the USA.

Valid argument.

I would not exactly disagree either. I said it when it happened that we should leave Iraq alone and that Saddam was fine the way he was.

Would also add that I don't think ousting Khadafi was a win either.

Yes, the US fucks up a lot... no argument there. I'm just saying that I don't believe ISIS would be helping out their neighbors.

This. Some people sleep better at night by thinking others are not as smart as them.  ::)

Or some people don't give a ratass about certain topics.  Have a sibling who is an electrical engineer who couldn't eeven tell you who the president and vp are.

Sad but true

You may be lead to believe that if you look at Islam within the context of the last fifty years.  The type of behavior exhibited by ISIS is present in Islam from the very start.  Remember Islam was rampaging for centuries before they United States got involved.  Many of the countries that are Islamic now were once strong holds of Christianity until Islam took them by force.

To your point, specifically when the Roman Empire had those areas, the 2nd century with the real consolidation of Christianity.

Now, this is not a religious thing, far from it for me.

Historically speaking, that area has been many different religions over the course of human civilization.

The USA always picks its targets, they seem to avoid upsetting Mr Putin and North Korea.

Some historians view the Crusades (dating to 11th century AD) as defensive actions against Islamic conquest.

I am not sure how credible these views are though.

There is evidence for this.   Christian crusaders were being accosted on pilgrimages to the holy land by Muslims.

How the fuck would they know what was going on on the other side of the world in the 11th century?

Agreed.

They also tread carefully around China.

I get that the economy is a global economy now more than ever, but I don't understand cowering to certain governments.

In the 80s, we would have never even remotely thought about doing business with a communist entity like China, but yet here we are 30 years later walking side by side with them.

I am very torn on the subject.

Don't be, I couldn't give a flying fuck what politicians and governments get up to.
It has no real bearing on my life.
