Matt Mendenhall - What happened to him?
« on: October 16, 2014, 12:13:35 AM »
So underrated. He was considered as one of the word pros back in the 80's/90's, yet destroys most of the current pros today. He seemed to be a cross between Bob Paris, Rory Leidelmeyer, Gary Strydom and Mike Christmas. Dude weighed almost 270 pounds. A true mass freak with symmetry.

He competed against the whos-who of 80's & early 90's bbing...some say rachel mclish was to blame

narrowly lost to haney in 82 at nats at 22yrs of age, beat paris and tim belknap

83 gets the flu 3 weeks out of nats, loses weight, hardness, but competes anyway cause his parents flew in, takes 4th behind paris, rory & christian, beats gaspari

84 loses out to christian in controversy, when most thought he was the clear winner

december 84, bad car-crash, ejected through windscreen, but recovered

85 loses out to shredded berry demey at world games, after winning the npc qualifier

skipped 85 nats, where the field was considerably weaker than prev years, many think had he competed, it was his

86, misses his peak and loses to gary strydom at npc nats, after, contracts a virus and his immune system is weakened severely through 87, he gets homeopathy treatment, and stays in bbing circles, starts studying homeopathy, becomes qualified in treatments and sells products, helps his brother in rehab centers. he is also an electrical engineer, but chose not to pursue it

88, joe weider pushes him to comeback, he does 88 nats, pulls out of evening show after poor pre-judging showing

91 makes a comeback places 5th behind levrone, wheeler, de mayo, ronnie coleman

92 starts personal training and endorsing supps

93 judges few shows

94 guest-poses at npc texas champs looking greart, gets standing ovation, announces retirement

96 starts a massage therapy practice

Thats pretty much it.

Matt also had some alcohol issues. And not some small ones either, from what I understand.

Try looking up Jeff King. There's a bodybuilder for ya. Could've beaten Haney, in my honest opinion.

^^ Great pics. :)

People tend to joke about his thick neck, but Jeff is a clear example of a bodybuilder who was completely balanced from head to toe. Easily one of my favorites of all time.

He still is one of my all time favorite. He disapeared fairly quick. From what i know he works as a health care worker.

That would have been great! Wes met him a couple times, he had nothing but great things to say about Jeff.
I wonder how all this guys feel of the direction Bodybuilding has taken?

When Jeff left bodybuilding he finished his education in physical therapy and now practices at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield MA and Greenfield MA.

He is shocked people still remember him! He trained hard/heavy, was pedantic about his diet and took basic compounds (no gh or insulin).
