Question for Onlyme

Onlyme, i was checking out musclemafia and i clicked on your bio.  i was surprised to read that you were ray mentzer's training partner.  did you know him when he supposedly bulked up to 270?  do you have any pics of him after his retirement?

Actually when we trained he weighed almost 300.  I know one time we weighed each other I weigh 289 and he was 290.  Weird cause he seemed so much bigger to me.  He had ENORMOUS legs, and his triceps were unreal.  I was wider and thicker though.  My arms size wise were as big if not a little bigger his looked so big cause of his tri's.  My legs were no where near his size though.  And I don't have one pic of Ray.  Never took one.  I hardly ever took pics of people I was with.  Most of the pics I have are from other that took them and sent them to me.

jesus.  what kind of shape was he in at that size?  also, do you think he could have gone far in the pros during his era?  i have to wonder what the mentzer frame looks like at 290.  why are there no pics of this on the internet?

Considering his height I think he carried the weight fine.  He had a small waist from side to side but he had a bowling ball gut.  It did stick out as far as his chest.  To tell you the truth they only parts I really noticed about Ray was his huge legs and triceps.  He was wide but not as wide as me.  He had big delts too.  He basically looked like an off season Pro.  Still strong as hell too.  I saw him several years later at a restaurant and he asked me to sit and eat with him.  I would say he was maybe 260 to 270 in weight.  Not near as stocky as before.

I see that now.  Back then I didn't really think twice about it.  I lifted but didn't follow BB.  It just so happen I trained where most of them went.  It was my friend Dan Keller and his wife Rosemarie who got me into World Gym back in 79'  They used to train and do acrobatics at the old Muscle Beach.  Rose was the mom of a girl I used to like.  Dan was built very good with great arms.  He looked allot like Bill Pearl's body.  Rose was very attractive and had huge boobies.  She was a looker when I knew them but they showed me pics back in the late 50's and 60's of them at Muscle Beach and I could tell Rose was one of the more popular girls. She was HOT!. 

They introduced me to an old friend of theres Ron Depolito who was great friends with Joe Gold and been training at Gold's since the day it opened and then went to Worlds where Joe was.  He brought me in and introduced me to Joe and even paid my membership.  Ron was very vascular and popular in Venice and the BB circle cause he was basically a white pimp.  He had a pink corvette convertible and always had at least one but allot of times 2 girls with him.  He was the man to invite to parties cause he made sure everyone had a girl.

I heard he later lost a leg due to steroids they said.  But that is how I got to meet and train with most of the big names.  Just lucky but didn't think much about it back then.  Louie was probably the most impressive guy I met and trained with just because he was on the Hulk.  Most of the other guys except Arnold and Sergio I didn't know who they were till they were introduced to me.

onlyme, did you see any other guys around like Zane or Platz?  Were the training styles of some of these guys a lot different?  Who trained harder out of all of them?

damn Keith, i never realized Ray was that big, i always thought he was one of those 220-230 guys, what kind of weights did you see him handle when he was at his biggest?

don't pat any attention to alexx, Keith, his dad used to molest him as a kid and poor alexx fell in love with him but then he saw dad having sex with mom and his heart was broken and he was never the same and that's what made him the bitter little queer he is today.

Onlyme: You are indeed a very lucky man to survive the bite of a  Brown Recluse spider and still have all you limbs attached.  Read a couple of years ago about a mother of three who lost both legs, arms and part of her nose from one of those bites. She lives in the Riverside/San Bernardino area. Usually attacks the legs first I believe. In a lot of ways it sounds like you have lived somewhat of a charmed life. Glad to hear your 100%.  Aloha!

Yes the doctors kept telling how lucky I was but didn't fell that way.  I also read a lady who started a website dedicated to recluse bites.  She lost 3 daughters all at different times by the brown recluse.

Also of anyone who I saw train hard all the time Platz would have to be it.  He trained 120% every single time I ever saw him.  Literally had two firends with him most of the time to carry him to the bench or stool after a set.  He put everything he had into every set.  I trained like that too but only on certain exercises.  I never saw Zane train.  I saw him at the gym only a coupe times but he was dressed in regular clothes.

Knowing what I know having read your experiences I would be real real hesitant to move into any area where recluses habit

People talk a lot about redbacks/funnelwebs/snakes etc here in australia but they really do pale in comparison to the effect that that spider seems to have on people. 

Speaking of training onlyme how is the fightback going, you don't mention it all that much.  I'm sure nigh on the whole board would be pulling for you to get back to your old self. 

(That was a pretty faggy statement but its probably true)

Well my training is back pretty good. I found a good partner who is young and is in a hurry to train cause he does it between jobs.  So we do everything in an hour or less.  So I definitely get a good cardio out of it too.  And he is strong.  I told him today I should be up to doing 405 for reps by the end of next month.  Not bad for taking off 6+ years.  It's my shoulders and arms that I feel really stronger now.  I just need to up my cardio after we workout.  Once I am up to an hour after training I will really start getting back into shape. I set the date of August 19 to get back pretty close to where I was.  That is my high school reunion. 

I only met Lee once.  Never trained with him.  He came to the Grand Opening of the Gold's in Honolulu back in 90'. What I do remember is back then I used to pop hot water bottles for different things.  Well he tried it with me.  The thing I remember is how big his veins got in his head and around his eyes when he tried to blow it up.  He barely got it anywhere but he tried so hard.  I thought he was going to pass out.

I know this isn't the training forum, but can you give an example of how you workout? Anybody who is recovering from a brown recluse bite, and lifts 400+ pounds after 6 years off has got to be doing something right!

Well I'm not doing yet.  Give me a month and half.  I am surprised though how strong my shoulders still are.  I am very simple when I train.  I do 6 to 8 reps with heavy weight.  I do 4 to 5 sets.  I don't do inclines and flats together.  I actually do my inclines first on shoulder days.  I am not lifting exactly like I want to right now cause I need to get in better shape. I'm not doing any dumbells and I love doing heavy dumbells.  Basically I just think it's the muscle memory nothing special.

Nothing like having the built in ability to get better looking without a huge amount of trouble

Sounds good onlyme, good to hear you're on the road to recovery.  To me its just bogus that you seemed to be having this uber fun life (that you probably took for granted back then) and then you've been laid up with this shit since.  Time to get back into shape and get some current stories to tell us all about.

Yes that is what I want.  Current stories.  I know when I get back into shape I will be able to do allot of new and exciting things.  I see on Oprah and so many other shows people who lost 60 or 100 pounds on their own.  All in all I will be losing way more than that. I guess I am lucky I have the frame built in.  Right now I went from being a huge extrovert tobeing basically a recluse.  I do nothing but work at home go to the gym and back.  I miss doing all the fun things and that is what I will enjoy the most.
