Only time Cruise went out of his way to play "someone else" was in Tropic Thunder.

With Cruise, you KNOW what you're gonna get.

With Brad Pitt, you can get anything from Autumn Legends, Joe Black, Fight Club, Troy or whatnot.
He's made lots of bad movies but several good ones too.

Not as consistent as dependable Top Cruise.

Or as Calvin H calls it, "Tropical Thunder".  Magnolia was a bit outside the norm for him too.

But, I still think Pitt is an overall better actor.  Seems to have much more range.

Brad pitt is really just a Dud, he's really not as good as people think he is.

He's ok, but he's nothing amazing.

Granted he has been the best looking man to walk the earth for 20 years now.(all homo).

Pitt is a better "actor" in my opinion in terms of his breadth.  Cruise basically plays the same guy in most of his films.

oh bull shit.....

Both are fine actors equally capable of playing characters different from themselves.

UnPitt Pitt: Twelve Monkeys, Assassination of Jesse James, Burn After Reading, Snatch

NonCruise Cruise: Born on the Fourth of July, Collateral, Tropic Thunder, Magnolia

They should both have at least one Oscar each by now.

C'mon, if you were any good you would have pursued it.  Or did the thought of making millions and have super models wet themselves over you just not appeal to you?

Maybe he would rather be a bodybuilder.

A friend runs a shooting range in the San Fernando valley near L.A. He spent an afternoon with Pitt and Angelina going over and using several firearms. He has worked with numerous celebs and said these two are down to earth regular off camera.

Another friend is the guy who does all the jack knife big rig truck tricks in Hollywood. He has worked with Cruise and told me "the little shit is crazy...he does a lot of his own stunts. I even drifted a tanker truck right over him as he ducked down."

So I guess there is a bit of testosterone in these loonie Hollywood types.

Why wouldn't there be? They're humans too, just like Scott Markey, Buck Angel, Woody Allen, Dj181 and the trainer.

x2

Dressing up changing haircuts for each movie and taking sharp turns with scripts and messing with dialects does not equal great "breadth" or "range".

Not saying Cruise is the widest ranged actor either but lets not elevate brad onto a pedestal here.

Cruise has greater range than Pitt.

Cruise can carry an entire film. Pitt can't - he depends on "co-stars" and is more often than not the co-star himself rather than the main star. Think of his best films and he's the second character rather the first.

Cruise for the win.

I'd say Cruise has more depth. Therefore you can buy him as a lawyer, a doctor, a thug, blue collar, agent, soldier...

Brad.. you sort of have to give some leeway and lend some sort of "movie acceptance" when he does things like commanding officer in Inglorious or a general manager in baseball

Brad is best suited for Joe Black type roles.. and Fight Club cool guy roles

When I think back at Oceans Eleven, a great movie, I don't remember anything of Brad except him eating a sandwich and walking around and looking good lol

Absolutely, that was just my humble opinion... Regarding The Last Samurai i was comparing quality of movies, not acting, as you said there are shitty movies with great acting from someone... Although TLS, other than being a great movie, Cruise's acting in it is good...

Apparently someone else thought so too. He was nominated for best actor in The Last Samurai, for both an Academy award and a Golden Globe, plus two others.

William Hurt is no slouch in the acting department.

Speaking of Fight Club, Ed Norton's range is great. But I digress..

Could Cruise play Joe Black?

Of course....

Now, think of "A Few Good Men"......could Pitt have held his own with Jack Nicholson?

Hell no.....

From my point of view it's pretty much a tossup. Both have a pretty good range as far as characters go. Good in drama and action movies. Cruise was great in Tropic Thunder as Les Grossman pulling off a comedic role.

Whoever said Pitt is a better actor than Cruise doesn't know much about acting.  Tom Cruise all day long in both movies and acting.  And I'm a huge Pitt fan also.  He's just not on the level as TC.

All you have to do is watch the film "Magnolia".  He blew everyone away in that movie and was also nominated for an Oscar.  Which he'll win eventually.  Probably in his later years like they snubbed Paul Newman for so long.
