Cant understand the hashtag thing

I get the original idea of hashtags on twitter to link to a company's web pages or what have you.  But I don't get the point of people, mostly females, posting hashtags which aren't links to anything... Why do they do this?

They were originally essentially search terms. Now they are mostly sarcasm or advertising programs.

Sometimes the hashtags are legit and will take you to sites that have something in common with what you posted on Instagram...
