Obama will nominate Brooklyn prosecutor Loretta Lynch for Attorney General, report says
Lynch, 55, is the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York; she would be the first African-American woman to be attorney general
The White House said today that Obama had yet to pick his nominee, but CNN says he's already decided on Lynch
Obama played coy today when asked if he'd settled on anyone in particular to fill the Cabinet-level position
Sources told Reuters that Lynch - if selected - would generate little controversy, making for a smooth Senate confirmation process

President Barack Obama is expected to pick Brooklyn prosecutor Loretta Lynch for his next attorney general, CNN reported on Friday, a move that would give the top U.S. law enforcement role to a low-key prosecutor with deep experience in both civil rights and corporate fraud cases.

Lynch, 55, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, would be the first African-American woman to hold the job if nominated by Obama and confirmed by the Senate.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said today that Obama had yet to decide on his nominee. Asked about reports that an announcement could come soon, he said he had no specific details on timing but no announcement was planned for Friday.

President Barack Obama also played coy today when asked by a reporter if he'd settled on a particular candidate.

'You’re going to be the first to find out, Major, along with everybody else,' Obama facetiously told CBS News' Major Garrett.

Sources close to the Obama administration told Reuters that Lynch was a top contender to replace outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder, who announced in September that he would resign.

The sources said they expected that if Lynch were selected, she would generate little controversy, making for a smooth Senate confirmation process.

Her nomination would be one of the first big changes for Obama to announce after Republicans won control of the Senate in congressional elections on Tuesday. Lynch was one of several candidates Holder had recommended to succeed him.

Lynch emerged as a leading contender after a previous top choice, former White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler, pulled out of consideration amid concerns her involvement in controversial Obama administration decisions could complicate her confirmation.

Other candidates reportedly being considered are Labor Secretary Thomas Perez, Solicitor General Donald Verrilli and Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.

Perez may undergo special scrutiny in the Senate confirmation process, however, over a 'secret deal' he allegedly cut with the city of St. Paul, Minnesota, when he worked at the Justice Department. The issue came up in a 2013 confirmation hearing when he was under consideration for labor secretary and is expected to be a sticking point again if Obama chooses him.

President Barack Obama is pictured here meeting with Congressional leaders at the White House today. In a statement to reporters before the meeting Obama refused to say if Lynch was his pick for attorney general

Holder, one of Obama's closest allies, had a rocky tenure as attorney general. He clashed frequently with congressional Republicans over gun control, same-sex marriage, and a desire to try terrorism suspects in civilian instead of military courts.

In one 2011 email released earlier this week, Holder referred to Republican members of the House Oversight Committee chaired by Darrell Issa as 'Issa and his idiot cronies.'

A Greensboro, North Carolina, native, Lynch earned her college and law degrees at Harvard, worked in the Brooklyn U.S. Attorney's office between 1990 and 2001, and served in the top post from 1999-2001 and since 2010.

Lynch developed a close relationship with Holder through her work on the attorney general's advisory committee, which she has chaired since the beginning of 2013.

In her first stint in the U.S. Attorney's office she oversaw the prosecution of New York police officers who were convicted in connection with the torture of Haitian immigrant Abner Louima, an incident that became a national symbol for police brutality.

More recently, her office has brought several high-profile cases, including the indictment, in April, of New York Rep. Michael Grimm, a Republican, for fraud.

Her office has worked closely with Justice Department headquarters on several big corporate fraud cases, and helped investigate Citigroup Inc over shoddy mortgage securities the bank sold, which led the bank to enter into a $7 billion settlement in July.

Lynch's office also was involved in the December 2012 $1.2 billion accord with HSBC over the bank's lapses in its anti-money laundering controls.

Prosecutors in Brooklyn are also investigating a member of Putin's inner circle, Gennady Timchenko, in connection with an oil trading and money laundering probe.

What did you expect?  A conservative?

And a judge.  Good point.  I still think on paper that a left-leaning prosecutor is better than someone working for some advocacy group.

??

Obama still has 731 days in office.   Using only executive orders, he can deliver a whole lot of headache.  Using only Veto power, he can effectively shut down Congress for the next 2 years.

Obama still has OVER half his 4-year term left.  It's a very long time.  During this past 2-month period, he mismanaged Ebola, underwhelmed ISIS,

You want to give the dude two more YEARS?   I think you're radically underestimating his willingness to ruin america to reach his goals.  He has nothing to lose now - he was holding back until after midterms.  This obama is highly dangerous.   Nothing to lose, nobody to stop him.

Either impeach, or own what he brings now.  At this point, you're leaving the TNT in the baby's crib.  Don't act upset and shocked when bay-bay goes boom-boom.  You have the senate - You could have stopped it.

It is when Obama is the president  ;D

EXACTLY.  It's half his term!   Look at what he's done in 2100 days in office... Beach Bum doesn't think he can wreck stuff with another 730 days in office?    ???

I hate to say it, but some RINOs are awfully soft on obama.  I don't know if they secretly are okay with the amnesty he brings, as they're okay with that too.  But at this point, owning public opinion/mandate, and owning senate/voting power... and now that HOlder is releasing all the incriminating documents...

Well, all the tools to impeach are there.   "we don't want media to say mean things about us" doesn't fly any more.   Media treashed you for a decade and you just demolished obama in voting.  And impeaching/prosecuting him for F&F is what is RIGHT.

RINOs, it's starting to be odd that you're so far against impeachement when obama has OVER HALF his term still in office. vIt's not 30 days left, it's 730 days left.   Why so soft on him?  Do you like some of what he'll bring?

Obama AG Nominee Lynch: Voter ID Laws were Passed by Racist Southerners, Must be Stopped
Pundit Press ^ | 11/8/14 | Aurelius
Posted on November 8, 2014 12:56:12 PM EST by rightistight

In a speech given at Long Beach earlier this year, President Obama's new nominee for Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, specifically called out voter ID laws as racist.

The remarks came at the end of a long speech, explaining the examples that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela set for people.

Ms. Lynch then began talking about the inequities that she sees in the United States...

She continued, "50 years after the march on Washington, 50 years after the civil rights movement, we stand in this country at a time when we see people trying to take back so much of what Dr. King fought for. We stand in this country. People try and take over the State House and reverse the goals that have been made in voting in this country.

"But I'm proud to tell you that the Department of Justice has looked at these laws and looked at what's happening in the Deep South, and in my home state of North Carolina has brought lawsuits against those voting rights changes that seek to limit out ability to stand up and exercise our rights as citizens. And those lawsuits will continue."

Ms. Lynch was no doubt talking about the Justice Department's lawsuit against North Carolina to stop their voter ID laws. Eric Holder even used the same kind of language as Lynch: “Allowing limits on voting rights that disproportionately exclude minority voters would be inconsistent with our ideals as a nation,” he explained.

Lynch to continue Holder's 'fierce commitment' to civil rights, Obama says
The Hill ^ | November 8, 2014 | Sarah Ferris
Posted on November 8, 2014 6:09:32 PM EST by jazusamo

Video at link.

President Obama on Saturday touted his pick for head of the Justice Department as a strong civil rights defender who shares the same “fierce commitment to equal justice” as departing Attorney General Eric Holder.

Obama said Loretta Lynch, a federal prosecutor with two decades of experience, would carry Holder’s strong legacy of civil rights given her own background.

"She has spent years in the trenches as a prosecutor aggressively fighting terrorism, financial fraud, cybercrime – all while vigorously defending civil rights," Obama said in a rare weekend announcement at the White House. If confirmed by the Senate, Lynch would become the first African American woman to lead the Justice Department. She would succeed Holder, who was the first African American to hold the post and has become one of the department’s longest-serving leaders.

Lynch would also be faced with the fallout of the deadly shooting of an unarmed black teen by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. The jury in the case will soon reach a decision, which is likely to stir more unrest.

Standing beside Holder and Lynch in the Roosevelt Room, Obama touted his nominee’s 30 years of experience in law and said "it's pretty hard to be more qualified for this job than Loretta.”

He pointed out that Lynch was raised in Greensboro, North Carolina, a city where a group of black students sat at a whites-only lunch counter and helped “spark a movement that would change the course of this country.”

Her grandfather had been sharecropper under the Jim Crow system and Obama said that if he was still alive, he would have been proud.

Lynch’s experience is far-ranging: She has prosecuted members of the Mafia, terrorists who plotted to bomb the New York City subway, and elected officials – including Rep. Michael G. Grimm (R-N.Y.) who recently won reelection to the House.

Obama said he was confident that Lynch would help drive White House priorities such as reforming the criminal justice system.

“Loretta might be the lawyer in America who battles mobsters and drug lords and terrorists and still has the reputation for being a charming people person. That’s probably because Loretta doesn't look to make headlines, she looks to make a difference,” he added.

Lynch said she was “thrilled” to receive the president’s nomination, which will now head to the Senate Judiciary Committee for review.

“If I have the honor being confirmed by the Senate, I will wake up every morning with the protection of the American people my first thought,” Lynch said.

Oh shut up with the impeachment talk.   ::)  Aside from the fact you don't have an impeachable offense, it takes 67 Senators to impeach the president.  There will likely be 54 Republican Senators in January.  Assuming all 54 wanted to remove him, they would need 13 Democrat Senators to vote for removal.  That is never going to happen.

So, your hero is safe.  You can keep cheerleading for him for another two years.
