this is when it is determined whether you love to lift or if it's just a hobby.  I work 50 hrs/ wk and I have 5 children ages 4 mo to 13 yrs.  I get up at 4 am everyday to train just so I may be able to get an uninterrupted workout.

wow..you're a beast......I wish I had that type of motivation....keep it up brother!

if you cant find 45min-1hour to work out you are a lazy fuck and a piss poor excuse for a human being. You sound like a fat fuck who says they are too busy to work out but have hours to shove Doritos into their fat fuck mouths.

DIE IN PISS LAZY

I force myself to go outside and exercise/run which it's pitch black and cars swerve at me and shit.

I need to figure out how to make morning work.

I suggest you wear a vintage hockey goalie mask and run waving a chain saw.
That should keep the cars from encroaching on your running space.

Unlike marriage.

LOL, not quite.
Having kids is very different form of commitment and obligation.
When the previous 3 marriages went bad, we filed for divorce and went our separate ways.

With kids, you are stuck with some more of $$ commitment until they are of legal age.

BIG difference.

Well? ???

I graduated this May and begun full time at the end of July. Somehow from then on, it's gone downhill with the training. A lot of things could be attributed to getting my first full time salary, it felt quite intoxicating going from barely enough to pay student literature and food to be able to buy pretty much whatever I want.

The problem is though, as time goes by, it gets worse and I realise that I can't neglect the training to the current extent. How do you manage social life/family life with work and training? Currently I'm pretty much cutting sleep hours to get back into things, working out 6 days a week and no more crisps and fizzy pops at work.

Yates won multiple Olympia titles and worked out 4 days a week for an avg of no more then an hr per gym workout.

I started serious bodybuilding back in the 1970's.
EVERY hardcore bodybuilder I knew then , WORKED a full time job.
Most did the heavy duty form of training similar to what Yates did many years later.
They busted ass, 3-4 days a week for an hr a workout. The ate basic , sound, simple meals and used moderate , effective amounts of quality steroids.  For cardio, a few ran , yes RAN hard, outside for 2-3 miles a few times a week.

If you love training and have a real passion for bodybuilding, you will find some time to workout.

Just because I wasn't meant to be a parent, doesn't mean many others love raising their children.

I know it costs you some $$ and the marriage didn't work out, but you're still a dad.
In my opinion, being a loving dedicated parent is one of the more useful ways to spend one's life.
Good luck .

I do spend time at the gym, I think it's currently a matter of bad planning. I've rescheduled to head for the gym straight after work. My plan is to aim for 80-90 minutes of training, split 50/50 between cardio and weightlifting.

Also, one problem is keeping my girlfriend happy. Heading for the gym before work was out of question as she would be woken. Basement dwellers here will probably yell "be alpha and smack her to obedience", those others with significant others know how stubborn these can be at times.
I simply had to abide, so early afternoon it is then, all in accordance with the will of the master of the house.

Another thing which I have realised now, rather late I might add, is that I haven't really matured mentally. Previously, while studying, I now realise how incredibly selfish and entitled I was. I now realise that I have to man up and do what I have to do. Diet and training first, the rest will have to come second.

I got in my best ( drug free) shape when I was married, and working as a full time HS chemistry teacher and football coach, 21 yrs ago.
I ran hard each morning for 20 min , after a brief 5 min slow jog ( for cardio) on an empty stomach.
I trained 4 days a week, similar to the Yates " Blood and Guts"  type of workout.
My actual diet, was Healthy Choice microwave meals with some added protein drinks .

Sergio Olivia used to work 10 hrs a day in a steel foundry , then lift for 2 hrs at the no frills Duncan YMCA in Chicago.
Ronnie was a full time cop , training at the very basic  Metro Flex gym , for his couple Mr Olympia wins.

NOBODY, has to be a lazy bum or do g4p to train for bodybuilding.

You are correct in every aspect, it's just that I have to find a way which suits my life as well. The working hours are just a part of the "job", a lot comes down to the networking which happens mostly outside of working hours through after works and company events.

My aim right now is to keep a steady pace and stick to my plan of heading straight for the gym.

Some career paths make it tough to keep up with your bodybuilding lifestyle.
I don't know how I had the energy to compete when I was teaching HS and coaching full time, plus grad school ( part time).

I never won any major title but I did have a burning desire to compete, so I did.

Now, I have a lot more time and resources for bodybuilding.
BUT, at my age, I lack the motivation to do much about it...and don't care LOL.
